Show Progressives 'Landmark Here is a brief editorial printed in this space January 13, 1964, shortly after the completion of another gargantuan structure at the institution on the other side of Point of the Mountain and shortly after that institution's (not Point of the Mountain's) president presi-dent announced his "resignation" to run for the U.S. Senate : "W.e understand that a downtown newspaper has come out strongly in support of naming Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University's new union building after newly retired Ernest L. Wilkinson. "We find ourselves seconding that motion. What building could be more fittingly named after the ulta-conservative ulta-conservative Senate candidate than a union building?" So we were triply pleased to see that our words (and that other newspaper's words) developed into some real action. We welcome the Wilkinson Center (it's official) to the ranks of extra-curricularism, and hail all those other big, modern buildings down there. Certainly each the huge theater complex, the rising ris-ing physical education plant, the skyscraper dormitories, dormitor-ies, the monstrous football stadium and the new union building is a hallmark to the progress of modern education. edu-cation. President Wilkinson has built a beautiful campus. camp-us. He's made a nice place to visit. |
