Show Learn Early About Marriage They say that ignorance i3 bliss, except where sex is concerned. Ignorance as to sex its problems, it beauties, its functions, its expectations, can be the cause of ruining marital mari-tal bliss. ' Medical doctors and psychiatrists around the world will accrue many marital problems to sex, to a disagreement between be-tween partners as to what is expected of each other, to a misunderstanding mis-understanding between one or both partners of what having children is all about. There are few people who will not agree that understanding understand-ing is the key to a happy marriage. Students hear this in their sociology, psychology, classes. Students, at the same time, are more prone to be thinking in terms of marriage than any other age group on earth. Now is when they should be gaining gain-ing the understanding necessary to help them in building happy marriages understanding financial matters, home-making, home-making, their chosen partner, and sexual relationships. There are two classes offered at this University for the purpose of building understanding in University men and women as far as having children is concerned : ma-trology ma-trology and patrology. Married students taking these classes laud their value, as well as single individuals. The University already requires that all students take a Health Education I class in order to graduate. These classes touch briefly on motherhood and fatherhood because the instructor must also discuss with the class the common cold, burns, cuts and bruises. Why not replace this general education educa-tion class requirement with the matrology and patrology courses and give students something really valuable? Most of what is taught in Health Education I classes is just a repeat of high school and junior high school material. Many students never graduate, but all take the general education requirements provided they finish two years of college. Most other students never find time to work matrology ma-trology or patrology into their schedules. Changing the requirement re-quirement from Health Education I to matrology-and pa- trology would give all of these students an education which most assuredly would be valuable throughout the remainder of their lives. Though it may seem insignificant to some, this change could be a step toward decreasing the Utah divorce rate. By changing ignorance to more complete instead of only partial understanding, the old cliche "ignorance is bliss" could be changed to marriage is bliss for many more couples who find each other on this University campus. |
