Show 9 IbunHa, Bui 9 Jieosid- By STEV WILLIAMS THE POINSETTIA Attracted by the beauty of a wild plant, Dr. Joel Poinsett, first U S Minister to Mexico generation ago, sent cuttings back to his South Carolina plantation where they thrived vigorously, and eventually gave all of us the familiar Christmas plant which perpetuates his name. Your poinsettia may last un- til next Christmas and even afterward, with care. When the leaves begin to dry, cut off one-half the growth, put it in the basement, water it every few. weeks. Plant outside in June in partial shade; bring inside in-side in early September, keep at 65 degrees. Saturday is the final day for shooting geese (Canada the snows can be hunted until the close of migratory wildfowl on Dec. 31), and we're hearing a few reports of honker kills in the county just when the season sea-son ends. For the 11 years we've lived in Beaver County, we've contended con-tended that this area should have a later season on migratory migra-tory wildfowl, but there still ain't no change we still have to stop shooting just when the hunting gets good. We intend to start now on. a campaign to get a later season for this area a season that corresponds cor-responds more closely to the migratory flights. How about some comment from other goose and duck hunters. Last week a posie for Mountain Moun-tain States, and this week a cactus. The Cedar City operators, handling all our toll calls now under the diaLs, are about as cheerful a bunch of gals as we've ever listened to, but they are certainly overworked. j Mountain States needs additional addi-tional circuits out of Milford, to handle the load, and they apparently need additional help at Cedar City. Many times, we sit and listen for long periods while the ringing continues for the operator at Cedar, and finally fin-ally she gets around to us. They're good at working a call on through after they get to it, but we'd say they need i more toll circuits, and more toll operators. Recently we advertised for a puppy for a boy's Christmas, and found a good one, In fact we found several. Anyone want a boxer pup, about three months old, contact ' Dixie Lamb in Milford. Babe Ruth has changed the date for the annual B & J Xmas party. It will be staged immediately imme-diately after the matinee Sunday Sun-day afternoon, Dec. 23, at the B & J Club in Milford. All children are invited to stop in at the B & J right after the matinee, meet Santa, and receive a Christmas stocking filled with traditional goodies. Hear about the army rookie who hated Christmas? Seems who didn't like Santa Claus. The other recruits were decorating dec-orating the barracks, when he popped off: "Phooey on Santa Claus! Twenty years ago I asked for a soldier suit end NOW I get one!" |
