Show ABBOTT SEEKS PARENT AID TO CURB ABSENCES "We are making another appeal ap-peal to the parents of high school children to please cooperate cooper-ate with us in curbing absence from school," Max G. Abbott, principal at Milford High, sa:d this week. "We published an attendance policy earlier in the year, to help parents understand he position of the school in this business of absence." "We realize that there are occasions oc-casions when parents want to take a trip and would like to take their children with them. In that case the parents should weigh the values carefully. If they st'll feel that it is important import-ant that their children miss school, they must realize that the absence will not be counted as excused. Whenever parents are in doubt as to whether or not an absence will be considered consid-ered as excused, they should contact the office at the high school." The school is not trying to punish students, Mr. Abbott pointed out, however past experience ex-perience has shown that some sort of an attendance policy is necessary, and in order to be fair to all students the policy must be administered as it is drawn up. We feel that no parents would ask us to give special privileges to their child that we can't give to all students. stu-dents. There seems to be some misunderstanding mis-understanding concerning the provision for allowing children to stay home to work. The state law will not allow us to excuse children to stay at home to tend children or do other tasks that are not absolutely necessary. neces-sary. If the parents will cooperate co-operate with the school and ask to have students excused only for an emergency, we will be able to continue to work with you. However, if the present practice of keeping children out of school for trivial reasons is continued, we will be forced to treat the absences as unexcused. |
