Show LEHMAN CAVES SKIPPER j WINS SUGGESTION AWARD An idea submitted to Uncle Sam a year ago and then forgotten for-gotten resulted last Monday in a $50 government check and a certificate cer-tificate from the U. S. Interior Department for Superintendent Max Wainwright of Lehman Caves National Monument near Baker, Nev. The presentation was made at the regular weekly meeting of the White Pine Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce and Mines by George F. Bagley of Boulder City, superintendent of Lake Mead Recreational Area and coordinating co-ordinating superintendent of Lehman Caves. Mr. Wain-wright's Wain-wright's prize idea involved a quick and easy method of changing chang-ing signs. In making the award Mr. Bag-ley Bag-ley spoke of the growing importance im-portance of Lehman Caves in the national park sytem. He exhiM.ted the proof of an illustrates illus-trates information booklet the government will issue soon, tell-' ing of the history, , geology and fantastic formations of this natural nat-ural wonder which penetrates the foot of mighty Mount Wheeler, loftiest mountain mass' within the Great Basin. Mr. Bagley exhibited the gov-I gov-I ernment master plan of the Lehman Leh-man Caves area, pointing out the location for further " develop ment to meet the needs of the ever-increasing numbers of visitors. vis-itors. The plans call for a new , entrance building, for more cottages cot-tages to house visitors and vacationers vaca-tioners and for improved dining room facilities. He pointed out. however, that the National Park Service does not wish to enter into competition with the campgrounds camp-grounds and other splendid facilities fa-cilities of the Forest Service which already exist to serve the public in the Mt. Wheeler section of the Nevada National I Forest. |
