Show FISHLAKE FOREST " TO HAVE BIRTHDAY PARTY NEXT WEEK February 10th is significant in the history of conservation in Utah declares B' aine Betenson, Supervisor of the Fishlake National Na-tional Forest. I It was on February 10th, 1899 the first land now in the forest was set aside for national forest for-est purposes by the proclamation of the President of the United States. It was the second such creation in the state. The first being the Uintah Forest on February Feb-ruary 22, 1897. With later additions addi-tions and consolidations, the Fishlake Forest now includes an area of more than IV2 mil ion acres of vi al watershed lands. It covers parts of nine central Utah counties. The birthday this year marks one half century of conservation in this section. In the United States it represents nearly 275 years of conservation thinking. The Plymouth colony in 1626 regulated the cutting of timber on colonial ' ands. It was not until un-til the turn of the last century that sigificant action was taken to conserve the nation's natural resources. ) Prominent among the early I crusaders in this movement was President Theodore Roosevelt and Forester Gifford Pinchot. Forester Pinchot once said, " National Na-tional life everywhere is built on the foundation of natura' resources. re-sources. Throughout human hi (j tory the exhaustion of these resources re-sources and the need for new supplies have been among the greatest causes of war." The national forests are dedicated dedi-cated to the proposition that conservation con-servation is wise use. The primary pri-mary objective of national forest for-est administration has been from Jhe beginning "the greatest good to the greatest number in the long run." In line with the primary pri-mary objective two basic principals prin-cipals in the management of the resources are "sustained yield," and "multiple use." Sustained yield means the timber, forage, wildlife, water and other resources will be utilized util-ized in such a way that the productivity pro-ductivity of the land will be permanent. Multiple use means that the forests are being managed on Jhe principal that each area yield the maximum number of uses and benefits, fitting each use to the other, giving exclusive right-of-way to one use only when it is clearly dominant. In commemoration of 50 years of conservation on our watershed water-shed lands a principal feature will be two 30 minute broadcasts broad-casts over KSVC, Richfield on February 10 and 11 between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Leading citizens from communities com-munities surrounding the forest will take part on the programs. As a means of encouraging the youth of the locality to better understanding the need for the conservation and wise use of our natural resources all students in the schools from the 6th through the 12th grades are being asked to participate in a quiz contest based on the content of the radio programs. Following the program pro-gram quiz qestions will be furnished furn-ished the schools. Conservation awards will be presented two boys and girls in each school turning in the best quiz papers. In addition they will be given a two day trip next summer under the direction of the forest rangers ran-gers on the various ranger districts, dis-tricts, Mr. Betenson reports. |
