Show Jean Briscoe Shields Saves Infant Baby From Blazing Trailer Home FIRE FROM IGNITED FUEL LINE BURNS TRAILER; BABY SAVED AT RISK OF OWN LIFE Mrs. Richard G. Shields of Salt Lake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Briscoe of Milford, heroically braved flames in a burning trailer to save the life of her infant son, Richard, eariy this week, in Salt Lake City. Awakening about 3 a. m. to find the trailer filled with smoke and flames, Mrs. Shields threw open a window and ran outside to call for help. Realizing her baby was still in the trailer, she dashed back inside, wrapped the infant in a blanket and carried it to safety. Both mother and baby received severe burns, but are reported in "good" condition at the home of her parents here. Mr. arU Mrs. Briscoe left immediately imme-diately upon learning of the accident, ac-cident, with Mr. Shields, and returned re-turned their daughter and grandson grand-son to Milford. Friends and neighbors of the young mother praised her daring t in entering the blazing vehicle to rescue the . infant. Bandaged about the head and hands, and holding the bandaged baby, she was photographed for the Salt Lake Telegram while modestly protesting that she "didn't do any more than any mother would have done. I was just too excited and too anxious to get help or I'd have brought Richard out with me at first. It was an awful sensation to wake i up andvfind yourself surrounded i by flames and choked with smoke. I'm surely thankful that my son isn't burned any worse." Fire department officials said the fire probably was caused by a gas line running too close to a burner. Mr. Shields was in Milford on business at the time |
