One of the special interest classes being taught at the present time is tumbling. Mr. Morley Petersen is the instructor. instruc-tor. Tumbling is a basic motor skill which covers extensively the mechanics of rolling, turning, turn-ing, springing, and twisting. From watching children at play one can see it is a natural activity ac-tivity one in which the little fellow, as well as his larger classmate, can excell. Thus, making it a natural to include the well planned Physical Education Edu-cation Program at the Spring-ville Spring-ville Middle School. Besides the fun aspect, it serves as a carryover activity for other sports. It is challenging challen-ging and exciting to develop tumbling skills whether elementary ele-mentary or advanced. Some of the specific values of tumbling activities are: Tumbling develops coordination coordina-tion and timing. Tumbling develops de-velops agility and flexibility because of the nature of the movements involved in the activity. ac-tivity. Much bending, tucking, and twisting is required to perform per-form the stunts well. Because of running and springing necessary in tumbling tumb-ling activities, strength is developed de-veloped in the legs. Courage and determination are developed develop-ed in some of the more daring and difficult tumbling stunts. Learning to control the body in basic tumbling skills has great carry over in the other sports. The art of falling correctly, as learned in tumbling, is of great importance in many sports, as well as normal daily activities. A relaxed rolling fall very often prevents or reduces injury and enables a person to regain his feet quickly after a fall. Because tumbling is a natural natur-al activity, it is self-motivating and provides a great deal of fun and enjoyment for its participants. DEVELOPING MUSCLES Not only does the tumbling class being taught at the Springville Middle School as a special Interest In-terest class by Morley Petersen provide keen interest, but its value as a muscle builder build-er and over-all body coordinator is readily recognizable. Students may select such special spec-ial interest classes as suit their desires. |
