Show . ) V - . Springville man in Far East Joseph G. Richins, Jr., seaman sea-man apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Grant Richins of 116 Brookside, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier car-rier USS Bon Homme Richard Rich-ard operating in the Far East. The 43,000-ton carrier arrived ar-rived in Hong Kong on March 23 for a five-day stay after departing de-parting from the Philippines on March 21. She left her homeport of San Diego on Jan. 28, for a seven-month tour of duty in the Far East as a unit of the Seventh Fleet's Western Pacific Pa-cific front line of defense. The carrier first operated in Hawaiian . waters where an Operation Readiness Inspection was conducted to determine the battle efficiency of the ship and crew. After a short stay in Pearl Harbor the 890-foot 890-foot carrier departed for Subic Bay, Philippine Islands. Karl P. Bird, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bird of this city, has been appointed superintendent su-perintendent of the operating operat-ing division of the refinery of American Oil Co., Salt Lake City. A graduate of Springville High School, Karl received his B. S. and M. S. degrees in physical chemistry from Utah State University. He has been employed at the refinery since 1943. Mr. Bird succeeds K. S. Holcomb, who has been made manager succeeding suc-ceeding Robert G. Clark, a a veteran of 41 years with the American Oil Company. |
