Show Utah County vool growers earn 5108,356.17 for marketinq year Claude Hunting, chairman, Utah ASC County Committee announced today that wool growers in Utah County have earned a payment of $108,356. 77 for the 1963 marketing year. Checks have been mailed to 322 producers for payment on their shorn wool and unshorn un-shorn lambs. Total net weight of unshorn lambs on which payments were made, that is, live-weight sold minus the liveweight of unshorn lambs purchased, was 4,665,667 pounds. Under the Wool Act, the support price for pulled wool is established at a level in relationship to the support price for shorn wool that will maintain normal marketing practices. This is to avoid unusual shearing prior to marketing in order to obtain ob-tain the incentive payments on shorn wool. This is accomplished accom-plished by making payment on unshorn lambs sold to give the producer essentally the same net returns that he would receive re-ceive if he sheared the animals and obtained incentive payment pay-ment on shorn wool. Mr. Hunting further stated that in competing with synthetic syn-thetic products emphasis must be placed on better preparation prepara-tion at the producers level. The higher the price the individual indi-vidual receives the greater the payment. Total net weight of wool sold on the shorn wool program pro-gram was 688,123 pounds. These payments are computed on the net proceeds received by the producer, thus encouraging encour-aging each producer on doing a better job, to insure a better product available to the market. mar-ket. The quality of wool determines de-termines its ultimate use. The net proceeds for Utah County on which payments were based was $299,170.09.' Wool and Lamb promotion deductions were the same for the 1963 marketing year as for previous years. Deduction rates are one cent per pound of shorn wool and five cents per hundred pounds of live-weight live-weight from unshorn lambs. The promotion program is implemented im-plemented by an agreement between the Secretary of Agriculture Ag-riculture and the American Sheep Producers Council and provides funds for advertising, promotional, and related market mar-ket activities on wool and lambs. |
