Show Just Between You And Me We've finally figured out why it's impossible to get an outside circuit before 10 a.m. Everybody who can get an outside circuit is calling Ma Bell to complain that that their phone is out of order. Saturday, the County News phone was working just fine. That is, it was working fine until abut 1:00 p.m. Then for some unknown reason Ma Bell sent one of her pole climbers to climb the pole on railroad property prop-erty in back of the shop. - 0 .- When we noticed him with a hand full of lines resembling resemb-ling spaghetti, we commented, comment-ed, "What are you doing, screwing up our telephone?" His reply, "You bet!" Little did we know how true that was. And the COUNTY NEWS has been without telephone service ever since, and it still wasn't fixed on Tuesday. But have you tried to call . repair service? The line is busy or the phone off the hook. After trying for over an hour, dialing one after another, an-other, we finally went through the operator to get connected. They promised to have it fixed by 5 p.m. Phooeyl They didn't show up. Maybe today? But our problems are not unique. Persons or businesses busi-nesses wanting' a new phone must wait and wait, and wait. We know- of one Instance where a farmer moved to town. He built a new home, and wanted to transfer his line. It took months. Another, a couple of miles out of the service area has been waiting for over a year. And after a recent hail storm several of my neighbors were without telephone service serv-ice for a couple of weeks. - 0 - Why does it take so long to get a telephone, or repair re-pair service in Beaver County? Is it time to lodge complaints with the Public Service Commission. Fat chance It would do any good. We are constantly bombarded bom-barded with news releases about new facilities that are supposed to Improve service. serv-ice. But for the most part, they only seem to isolate us from that service. If anything any-thing goes wrong, we are lost in a sea of confusion and red tape. , 0 -Milford is facing tremendous tremen-dous growth. We are trying to attract Industry and new business. Geothermal, MX, and other developments will cause an Influx of new people, peo-ple, and new homes. How can Ma Bell supply them with service if she can't take care of what she has already? Few people can get by without a telephone. Busi- ness cannot survive without a telephone's irritated as I get sometimes, there is just no substitute for the telephone. You can reach almost anyone in a few seconds sec-onds (except the repair office) of-fice) and have an answer to your problem, order supplies, sup-plies, or check up on the kids or grandparents. A letter let-ter or telegram won't fill the vacuum. The telephone is a wonderous thing, comparable com-parable to the wheel in the development of modern civilization. civ-ilization. 0 - It's not just the fact that It's nearly Impossible to put out a newspaper without the telephone. We had a very Important call to make. We wanted to call President Reagan about MX. We wanted want-ed to tell him not to make a political decision on MX deployment. Don't pay attention atten-tion to special interest groups, church or political leaders, regardless of their position. But make your decision in the best interest ofthe whole country, and the free world. The Great Basin will survive sur-vive with or without MX. But if MX is essential to the survival of the free world then it is essential to those of us who live in the Great Basin. Because nowhere in the world is there a more free and independent people. And we will support your decision. That's what I would have told him If my phone was working. But since it's not working, maybe the readers of this column will relay the message to him. The number is (202) 456-1414. Just ask to leave a public service message. I'm sure he'll appreciate hearing from you, and it might just be the support he needs to make the right decision. |
