The Republicans : gained control of the com -i '. m lttee as a result of the S ':, recent national election, which gave the GOP a ma-;jority ma-;jority in the Senate. During the j. 96th Congress, my approprl-V-Rations committee slotenabl-;ed slotenabl-;ed me to shepherd through record funding for the CUP and conduct hearings on the MX missile basine mno among other thins. I look forward to broadening my efforts ef-forts even further to inclue such critical areas as energy en-ergy research development, public lands and military construction. Energy development de-velopment will be a key issue in Utah through the end of the century, and I am glad to be in a position to influence the course of that development. The MX issue will be a primary concern con-cern and I will want to ensure en-sure adequate federal resources re-sources to mitigate the socioeconomic so-cioeconomic Impacts, no matter what basing mode is selected. Beyond Utahs direct interests, in-terests, Garn said he is firmly committed to the goals and objectives which the American electorate mandated during the last election. He will focus special attention at-tention on the EPA, noting that Utah has had a difficult diffi-cult time coping with questionable ques-tionable EPA edicts in recent re-cent years. The whole Geneva Gen-eva Steel episode in which a vital component of Utah's economy was threatened is Indicative of the problem. The Senator's general areas of jurisdiction include: Defense, CIA, Energy and Water Development, DOE, BLM, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, HUD, NASA, EPA, Selective Service, Veterans Vet-erans Administration Inter-Ion, Inter-Ion, Department of Energy and Military construction for Army, Navy, Air Force and Defense Agencies. |
