Show Schoolers. and v-M Home &J Dr. Daryl J. McCarty Executive Secretary Utah Education Association Congratulations, parents. You have weathered the sum -mer and the kids beinghome. They are now safely tucked back into school and you have returned to your normal duties, du-ties, minus the kids underfoot under-foot all day. For a couple of weeks, now, they have been working hard to get back into the swing of school life, Including Includ-ing studies, meeting new friends and renewing old acquaintances. ac-quaintances. Or have they? The first few weeks are critical in helping to determine deter-mine the success or failure of students. Are you checking check-ing with them to find out how they feel about school, to determine if they are keeping up on their studies from day one and working with them to develop a whole -some, positive attitude towards to-wards school? Are you providing pro-viding time for them to vent their frustrations and share their treasured moments with you? Have you spent time determining studytime, looking for the best place to study In your home and assisting in seeing that the needed materials are available? avail-able? Are you discussing what is happening in each class to make sure they understand what is going on . and not beginning with misunderstandings. mis-understandings. -And are you doing all you can to encourage them to keep at it and not get discouraged? Are you aware of the new friends they are meeting and those with whom they are becom ing real buddies? Are they attending at-tending classes as they should and developing good work habits? Don't forget that returning return-ing to school with new teach -ers, new subject matter and new classmates is not always al-ways easy. Much changes over the summer. Some kids can handle the changes in relatively smooth manner, while others have a more difficult time. Allhavesome major. adjustments to make. Right now is the best time for you to help your children have the most successful and productive year possible. A genuine concern of the parents, par-ents, expressed openly to their children will go a long way toward saving frustrations frustra-tions and disappointments between now and the end of school in 1981.
