Show EPA WITHDRAWS BUFFER ZONE RESTRICTIONS In a move welcomed by farmers, the EPA has withdrawn with-drawn its proposal for pesticide pesti-cide applications 'buffer zones' on cotton and perhaps per-haps forestalled plans for expansion of the limits to other crops later this year. Frank O.Nishiguchi,pres. of the Utah Farm Bureau, hailed the decision as a blessing for consumer and farmer alike. The EPA would have required re-quired states to enforce buffer buf-fer zones between crop area sprayed with pesticides and sensitive areas such as houses, shopping malls and roads. The buffer zones would have become areas where insects and weeds could thrive to reinfest adjacent ad-jacent croplands. This would lead to more spraying on the land producing crops, adding more - not less - pollutants to the environment. |
