Show lorioisQ liotod m threatened ' The Beaver Dam Slope population of the desert tortoise tor-toise in southwestern Washington Wash-ington County, has been listed list-ed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The tortoise population is now estimated at less than 3 50, and has been proposed for the endangered species list. But the UJS. Fish and Wildlife Service determined that because of recent conservation con-servation actions taken by the BLM under whose jurisdiction juris-diction the tortoise's entire critical habitat is found, the creature could be listed as threatened instead. Fifty percent of cattle use in the area was reduced in 1965, with another 23 percent proposed. In the future grazing will not extend ex-tend beyond April 30. Critical habitat for the tortoise is 35 square miles of public land managed by BLM in Washington County. |
