Show lllo We suppose by now you've heard the good news and the bad news. The bad news is that Jane Fonda is going to Iran to negotiate the release re-lease of the hostages. The good news is that Ted Kennedy is driving her to the airport. - 0 -Somehow the holidays have nearly escaped us this year. It's like that in this business; busi-ness; when holidays fall on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The best prep -. aration still leaves much to be desired and the COUNTY NEWS staff too tired to enjoy them. But good news next year Christmas and New Years will be on Thursday, a day that does not disrupt our deadline. 0 - We hope that isn't all the good news we have to look forward to in 1980, but the situation doesn't look good. Prime topic of conversation locally is last month's heat bill. And it really wasn't all that cold in November. Several big shade trees hit the dirt last week and little lit-tle of them made it to the dump. They were quickly sawed up for neighborhood neighbor-hood fireplaces, and to replenish re-plenish fast disappearing wood piles. There is some concern that those using fireplaces and wood stoves for supplemental supple-mental heat may lose their all electric status. That's one UP&L will have a hard time selling to the Public Service , Commission. They've been arguing that we have to conserve energy. 0 - As we approach 1980,the Iranian situation seems little lit-tle improved. The' OPEC nations agreed to disagree which means the price of crude will continue to escalate es-calate along with gasoline and fuel oil. Inflation is gaining gain-ing on the economy at a rapid pace. But take solace in your good friends and neighbors around you. The days are starting to get longer, and the heating season cannot last over two or three more months. The law of averages avera-ges says the country has to take a right turn sooner or later. Congress has adjourned ad-journed for the holidays, and can't get us into any more trouble for a few days. 0 - Only a fool or a psychic would pretend to know what the '80's have in store for us. Will there be some new energy breakthrough that will save the economy, and halt Inflation? Will we elect a president who can lead the nation back to prosperity and peace? Will the automobile industry introduce a fullsize sedan that gets 100 miles to a gallon of gas? Will we get off the environmental en-vironmental kick, cut bureaucratic bu-reaucratic regulations, and let private industry compete on the open market? Will hunger, famine and greed be erased in the world? 0 - The '80's hold the prospect pros-pect of the future. There is j little we cannot do if we are willing to make the necessary nec-essary steps to do it. Certainly styles will change. Pants may be worn short enough that you don't walk on them. Music may be written that you can sing to without embarassing your . parents. A new life style is certain. We hope it will be one of peace, happiness and prosperity pros-perity for you. That you find God, love and friendship friend-ship with your fellowman. That your family and loved ones are warm and secure. - 0 - We enter the '80's with doubt and apprehension. But we know, the answers to the many questions are Just around the corner. ' The world has faced many crisis since it's beginning. Each one seemed worse than the one before. And as each was conquered, we took a step closer to the next. We can't promise there won't be another crisis. But we can promise that if we all pull together, we can lick this one. |
