We sincerely appreciate the past support we have received re-ceived from your group, as well as your offer for assistance as-sistance with government officials; of-ficials; we will not hesitate to contact you when this Is appropriate. Sincerely, Earth Sciences, Inc. Douglas N. Stevens President Mr. David Lee Department of English Southern Utah State College Cedar City, Utah 84720 Dear Mr. Lee: In reference to your letter of November 9, 1977, to Mr. Red Wilson of the Beaver County News, It would seem appropriate that I respond to some statements and correct cor-rect some conclusions you seem to have reached: 1. Back in February of 1976 when we were visited by the State Accreditation Team it was the view of the team at that time that our English program at Milford Mil-ford High School was one of ! the weaker programs in the i school. I agreed with the re- i port at that time and would still stand by that posture J relative to the program at that time. Your first error is that you did not check the facts prior to submitting your letter let-ter to the editor. You Imply that the assessment was invalid. in-valid. Such was not the case. I, too, have participated in many accreditation visits and it has always been our practice to point out areas of observed weaknesses as 1 1 . well as strengths. Any team of which I have been a member mem-ber has viewed our role as one of encouraging improvement improve-ment rather than one of "whitewash", hence suggestions sugges-tions for improvement. Your second error is in "indicting" specific members mem-bers of the teaching staff at Milford High School. The Accreditation team did not do so and neither should you. At that time (February, 1976) English classes at Milford High- School were being taught by several different people. Some of those class- , es were being adequately instructed in-structed as was the case with the specific teacher to whom you refer, but the fact remains that much of the program as a whole did need improvement. These circumstances were discussed dis-cussed with those involved. District priorities instituted institu-ted in English and Reading have now corrected most of those concerns in that we now have English majors ' teaching all of the English classes. We would presently hold our English Program at Milford High School up against any In the State, with Mrs. Alice Elmer and Miss Gem Mercer filling those roles very well. 2. If our students "breeze through" your classes at Southern Utah State College, I suggest you take a look at your 'course content or methodology. meth-odology. I believe our students stu-dents are as well prepared as most, but I don't think any college English class should be a "breeze". I such Is the case our students who are now getting better high school Instruction than was formerly the case may do well to try to waive college col-lege English and get on with their "education". In summation may I suggest sug-gest that since no individuals were suggested as being incompetent in-competent teachers, no apologies were or will be forthcoming. If any are due it would seem more approp-r approp-r iate from yourself since you have been the only one to levy unfounded charges against patrons, teachers, administrators, and the School Board over matters long out -dated and which were none of your business in the first place. Sincerely, Lynn Haslem Superintendent |
