Show ?W ,-:zf X r I ''ft?'' ry i THE BIG DEFENSE: The real game between the Cowboys Cow-boys and Beavers last Friday was defense. Here the Cowboys site in on Mitch Oakden 11, carrying the ball. Other players are 51 unidentified, 88 Mark Corry, 84 Kim Glover, 60 Brad Kirby and 41 Steve Martin from Kanab. The Beavers are more difficult to indentify but 52 is Theron Jessup and 22 Daniel Robinson. The Cowboys, riding an un -beaten season that included in 18-12 win over the Beavers Beav-ers in the first game of the season, were favored by most polls. However, there were a few hardheads in Beaver County who didnt think they could do it again. The Beaver received and started their downs from their own 10 yard line. A rumble on the first play gave the ball to the Cowboys, with a 1st and goal, on the Beaver Beav-er 10. A cloud of gloom hung over the Beaver stands just as a huge rain cloud had hung there before game time. , But the cloud soon passed as the tenure was set in the next four plays. The determined deter-mined Beaver defense stifled the touted Cowboy offense, and on 4th down the Cowboys i i i in i . i were on their own 29, and were forced to kick. Beaver took over on the fifteen. Beaver moved the ball a little, but for the most part the rest of the half was give or take, with both teams moving mov-ing freely between the 20 yard lines, but giving away to strong defenses closer to the goal. With only 14 seconds left in the first half, the Cowboys on a 4th and sixteen were forced to punt. Kevin Bunting Bunt-ing dropped back for the pass, and the Beavers charged through the line. The ball had barely left his foot when big Doug Farns-worth Farns-worth threw his body in front of the ball. The ball headed for the Beaver goal. Lory ' Gurr picked it up on the six and stepped across the goal for the touchdown. Mitch Oakden kicked the extra point and Beaver led, '7-0. Kanab crossed the goal line twice, but one was called back to where Ricky Gate stepped out of bounds, and the other Kim Glover bobbled the ball for several steps in the end zone before be-fore finally dropping it. Mark Corry, the Cowboy fullback, started the second half with a 58 yard run, one of three big rushes he rolled up. Bunting, Gate, and Steve Martin combined iMnnrf-l on several sweeps and a couple of bombs for good yardage. Steve Gillins called a good game for the Beavers, who kept more to the ground, utilizing Oakden and Daniel Robinson, for short yardage. The wet field caused several sev-eral slips and fumbles that could have changed the game, but no fan went home cheated. cheat-ed. Statistics showed the teams even. Beaver gained 207 yards to Kanab's 201, each had nine first downs, and the Beavers drew six penalties to the Cowboys' five. Kanab completed six of seventeen passes to Beaver's Beav-er's three of nine. Kanab had two interceptions and Beaver one. Both teams had three fumbles. Defensive standouts for Beaver were Doug Farns-worth, Farns-worth, Joe White, RogerDon Marshall and David Crook. The Cowboys got a lot of defensive work from its big line. Alvin Brown and Kevin Ke-vin Bunting received the nod as top defensive players. Elsewhere in the region M ilford was idle, while North Sevier evened the score over Parowan 13-9. The Rams scored first on a 27 yard field goal. North Sevier came back with two Travis Simpson passes, 10 yards to Steve Camp and 11 yards to Paul Harward. The Rams scored in the final minute on a Hulet to Robinson pass, but it wasn't enough. This week the Tigers go to Kanab. The Tigers looked look-ed good the second half of the North Sevier game, and could be a spoiler in the second half . Beaver will go to Parowan and if there is not let -down after the big one, should have no trouble. North Sevier is idle. |
