Show The Dominguez-Escalante Bicentennial Expedition will arrive in Milford October 9th, for a big day of cele bration. This group of 15 riders are retracing the 1776 trail of the Fathers Francisco Fran-cisco Atanacio Dominguez and Silvestre Escalante. The historic Dominguez-Escalante Dominguez-Escalante expedition planned to leave Santa Fe, N. M. on July 4, 1776 the same day the Declaration of Independence Indepen-dence was signed. "However, numerous delays prevented the expedition's departure until July 29," the first recorded re-corded instance of Europeans Euro-peans visiting the area now within the boundaries of Utah. For several years prior to 1776, Spanish missions had been established in California Califor-nia and a line of communications communi-cations between there and the older missions of NewMexi-co NewMexi-co was wanted. The Fran-cisean Fran-cisean fathers also hoped to bring Christianity to Indians In-dians who would be encountered encount-ered enroute and ultimately establish Catholic missions among them. Dominguez was official leader of the group, but since Escalante kept a well -written diary of the company's progress, prog-ress, his name has been more often associated with the trek. .The ten men were joined by two others of mixed blood and two Indians from the Utah Lake area, called Lagunas ' and named by Escalante, Silvestre Sil-vestre and Joaquin. Other Indians traveled briefly with the company from time to time. The stops near Milford were significant in that the discouraged padres were halted by a three -day snow storm on arrival at Black (Continued on Page 2) served. Commencing at 7:30 p.m., the beautiful and exciting "Ballet Folklorico" will be presented by a group of outstanding out-standing dancers from Salt Lake City. They have presented pre-sented this show many times and have received great acclaim ac-claim for their expertise. It is hoped that all residents resi-dents of the county will avail themselves of good things on October 9th. Tickets for the barbecue and ballet will be sold as a package throughout through-out the county. Prices will be: Singles - $3.50, Couples - $6.00, Family of 3 -$8.00, Families over 3 - $10.00. A commemorative booklet that sells for $1.60 will also be included with the purchase price. Any funds left over cost will be contributed to the monument fund. Donna Morris is heading ticket sales. She will be assisted as-sisted by individuals and groups throughout the county. HERE'S MORE ABOUT DEDICA TION Rock. At succeeding camps near Milford, the party drew lots to determine their course. Despite their disappoint -m ent at not continuing on to Monterey, the group felt a sigh of relief as they turned south and headed back to Santa Fe. Milford is one of only four locations in Utah where Dominguez-Escalante Monuments will be placed. Governor Rampton recently recent-ly stated that "This was the most significant thing that happened in these western states 200 years ago." To commemorate this great event and welcome the expedition to Beaver County a number of activities will be carried out. Members of the Sheriff's jeep posse, under the direction direc-tion of Sheriff Dale Nelson, will meet the riders on Oct. 7th at Black Rock, about 20 miles north of Milford and escort them during their travels in Beaver County. Jeep posse members and their wives and members of riding clubs and their wives will join with the group for a chuck wagon breakfast on Oct. 9th. The riders and their escorts es-corts will arrive in Milford at 1:30 p.m. where they will be featured in a parade through Main Street. Bill Wood will ride as the Grand Marshall and be joined join-ed by the county commissioners, commission-ers, and Dan Joseph, County Bicentennial Chairman. The Bicentennial Queens and their attendants from each community and the County and State Dairy Princess will also be featured. At 2:30 the dedication ceremony for the beautiful, commemorative Dominguez-E Dominguez-E scalante monument will be held. Carlton Culmsee will deliver the dedicatory address. ad-dress. Mr. Culmsee was a former resident of Beaver County He is a noted author and taught literature at BYU and Utah State University. He is also a graduate in geology and has devoted years to a study of this area. After the dedication, there will be a presentation of the film, "The Padres'', and interesting exhibits of Indian artifacts and other relics will be on display in the Milford Elementary School.
