For some reason Christmas Christ-mas has crept up on me unawares. un-awares. Of course, I knew it was coming, but It seemed that lt should be a long way off. My Christmas spirit was decidedly' lacking. I felt like running an ad in the paper reading, "Lost - Christmas spirit; finder please return." re-turn." Then one by one the Christmas trees began to appear ap-pear in the windows, neighbors neigh-bors were busy stringing lights around the front doors and the pines in the yards. The children brought home "pieces" to learn for the Christmas programs - directions di-rections were sent home for the Candy Cane outfits - but I still felt that THE day was far In the future. Christmas, like everything every-thing else, is an attitude of the mind and heart. A rare few are able to carry the spirit of Christmas with them throughout most of the year. Th e rest of us put it on like a mask - and bring it out only when the season requires. We forget, too, that Christmas is not a gay, happy hap-py season for everyone - the lonely, the sick, those who mourn for loved ones gone on. Christmas for them is almost an agonizing time, to be borne, to survive, to reach for the spirit, but never quite attain it. Yet what does Christmas signify to it's believers be-lievers but Hope? The knowledge know-ledge that at least we have endured the things that have been - and the Hope that a better life lies ahead.
