The Beaver County News has been designated a "National "Na-tional Blue Ribbon Newspaper" News-paper" for 1975 by the National Na-tional Editorial Foundation, Washington, D. C. In announcing the designation, designa-tion, Foundation President Paul D. Coffman, newspaper publisher from Melrose Park , Illinois noted that the News was one of 306 newspapers news-papers to achieve this designation desig-nation in a nationwide program. pro-gram. Twenty -five criteria, measuring the newspaper's service to its community against a national standard, were employed in the evaluation. evalua-tion. Publishers whose newspapers are recognized for their over -all excellence, excel-lence, or who had previously previous-ly been accorded the Foundation's Foun-dation's Blue Ribbon designation, desig-nation, participated in the judging. Overall, larger circulation circula-tion newspapers fared better than smaller ones, and dailies dail-ies were more successful than weeklies percentagewise, percentage-wise, although many more weeklies participated. Although many former Blue Ribbon newspapers achieved the designation again, some former standard bearers did not measure up this year. Coffman, NEF president, attributed this to the overall Improved quality of participating newspapers, and said the judges may be getting more critical. The reproduction of half-tones and the quality of make-up and presswork is vastly improved and continues contin-ues to show improvement each year." He added, "the one outstanding out-standing feature of most of the Blue Ribbon newspapers is the development of the editorial page. Many newspapers news-papers not only feature an attractive editorial page offering of-fering good comment on local lo-cal issues, but often offer editorial cartoons to highlight high-light the page. The public opinion forum offered through the 'Letters to the Editor' also shows that many newspapers are getting Input In-put from their readers which demonstrates their concern for the local communities they serve." The National Editorial Foundation, established in 1957, is dedicated to the improvement im-provement of Journalism and Journalism Education. It has conducted the annual Blue Ribbon Newspaper Evaluation Evalua-tion program since 1969. |
