Udall, D-Arlz., pictured here in the House Interior Committee Room, will both be in attendance on Saturday, Sept. 14th, in Cedar City for the hearing on in -lieu taxes. Utah is representative of the public land states in the west which have large amounts of federally owned, tax exempt land within their borders. The proposed pro-posed legislation would establish a system whereby the States and counties would receive compensation from the federal government nearly equivalent to the tax assessed value of this property. The question of where the Federal Gov't, will get the money to pay the counties has not been answered. If it is passed on to those using the lands in the form of grazing fees and royalties on minerals, it could have a disastrous effect on the economy, rather than a good one. |
