Show ALCOHOL MAIN CANSE ' OF HOLIDAY DEATHS "Holiday pressures with all their stepped-up social activities activi-ties traditionally lead to tragi; results for many drivers," Leo H. Barlow, vice president for traffic of the Utah Safety Council, warns motorists. The safety official pointed to alcohol as the primary problem. prob-lem. "Alcohol dulls our senses and deadens restraint that usually usu-ally governs our behavior," he emphasized. "We take more chances, we overlook risks when we're under the influence influ-ence of liquor. We do things we normally wouldn't do." Mr. Barlow cited studies that show that alcohol is involved in-volved in as many as half the lalal traffic accidents. "These estimates involve no special time of year; but during dur-ing this season of parties and celebrations, the implica'ions are even more frightening," he said. Mr. Barlow's warning was clear: If this holiday is to be kept from being disastrous for many people and many cars in Utah, care and common sense will have to replace the all too common holiday carelessness care-lessness of some uninhibited drivers. |
