Show WEEDS IN ALFALFA CAN BE CONTROLLED Alfalfa growers now have another tool available for controlling con-trolling annual weeds in their crop. Louis A. Jensen, extension exten-sion agronomist -with Utah State University, is informing county extension agents and growers that the chemical compound com-pound called Simazine has just been registered for that purpose. pur-pose. He noted that numerous tests of this product have been conducted con-ducted in . the state by extension exten-sion workers over the last few years. It has proven to be effective ef-fective against most of Utah's annual weeds and safe to the alfalfa when applied as recom mended. The following recommendations rec-ommendations are- given for its use this fall: 1. Apply at rates of 1 to lVz lbs per acre. Use the lower rate for light textured soils and the higher rate for heavy soils- 2. Apply after killing frost and before the ground freezes. 3. Treat only alfalfa stands that are at least one year old. 4. Leave treated fields in alfalfa al-falfa for at least two years. 5. Do not use on sandy or gravelly soils. 6. Do not graze for 30 days after treatment. County Agent Grant Esplin plans to have some trials of this material in Beaver County Coun-ty this fall. |
