Show COUNTY SCHOOLS GET NEW SERVICE With the addition of a speech and hearing clinician to the district staff, a new service ha : been added to the Baaver County Schools. All students in the elementary element-ary schools and those in the 7th to 10th grades will be screened in an effort to select those students who will benefit bene-fit from the program. The screening consists of checking students' ears with a pure tone audiometer and checking their speech productions as to how they produce specific sounds. Statistics indicate that 5 to 10 of the students will demonstrate dem-onstrate a hearing loss, and about 10 will demonstrate incorrect speech productions. Of the 687 students who have been screened, 10.9 indicate possible hearing problems, and 16 indicate speech problems. Those students who fail the screening for hearing will be re-tested and if necessary they will be referred to a hearing clinic or otologist for further evaluation. Those children who fail the screening for speech will receive therapy during the regular school year. The therapy ther-apy sessions will be about 20 minutes each and will be held twice a week for each child. In the area of hearing the following services will be available to the school children chil-dren and community members: Hearing evaluations, Instructions Instruc-tions in the use of hearing aids, Instructions in how to lip read, and Instructions in the conservation con-servation of hearing. Services available in the area of speech and language include: in-clude: Articulation therapy for those who do not produce their sounds correctly; Stuttering Stut-tering threapy; Cleft palate speech therapy; Delayed language lan-guage therapy for those who have poor sentence and language lan-guage development; Voice therapy ther-apy for those who have lost their voice or who speak in an unpleasant voice such as too high, too low, too loud or too soft; Tongue thrust swallow therapy for those who swallow incorrectly and are pushing the front upper central incisors forward, and Speech therapy for cerebral palsy children Robert Puffer, the speech and hearing clinician, would welcome the opportunity to speak to civic clubs concerning concern-ing the program.
