Show VIET NAM VETS NOW ELIGIBLE FOR LEGION MEMBERSHIP American Legion membership member-ship ranks have been opened to the current generation of veterans in what must have been one of the fastest legislative legis-lative procedures in the history his-tory of Congress and the office of-fice of the President. Just 48 hours after the Legion's Le-gion's 48th National Convention Conven-tion approved a proposed amendment to its constitution, permitting Viet Nam veterans to become members, both houses hous-es of Congress had passed the legislation necessary to amend the Legion's Federal charte: and President Johnson had signed the measure into law. Men and women of tlu armed forces who have been honorably discharged, who served on active duty between. Aug. 5, 1964, and "the cessation cessa-tion of hostilities as determined by the government of the United Unit-ed States," are now eligible for membership in the world's largest veterans' organization. Previous eligibility was limited lim-ited to World War I, World War II, and Korean veterans. |
