Show BLRTON GETS ARMY OKEH FOR UTAH SPUDS Representative Laurence J. Burton announced today that the Defense Department has assured as-sured him that 'Utah origin potato supplies, if and when offered, will receive full consideration con-sideration on a competitive basis." Mr. Burton stated that this assurance was in response to a letter he wrote to Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNa-mara McNa-mara early in December in which he relayed the complaint of Utah potato growers that they had been denied the right to bid on the sale of potatoes to be consumed by military forces in the California area. "It is obviously in the best interests of the government," Mr. Burton told the secretary, "to give all would be suppliers the opportunity to bid, thereby enabling the government to purchase at the lowest price. The Utah potato growers are in a position whereby they can ship very competitively to the California markets, and I certainly cer-tainly think that they are entitled en-titled to the opportunity to submit their prices." The Defense Department suggested sug-gested to the Congressman that potato growers who are interested inter-ested in supplying potatoes in the California area or to other nearby military installations contact the Denver, Colo., Supply Sup-ply Office of the Kansas City Regional Headquarters of the Defense Subsistence Supply Center. |
