Show y s , 4 ' Hl ''is 1''' ,,,V Showplace of Geneva's agricultural department is this eijht-acre eijht-acre experimental farm where research has been conducted sines 1953 to determine any effect of fluorides on crops grown in Utah County. As many as 155 different varieties of crops have been grown hoie in the open "air and inside specially designed greenhouses green-houses where planls are exposed to carefully measured amounts of fluorine. The experinienlal farm was set up on plant property near Geneva's slag dump as a part of "Operation Good Neighbor," U. S. Steel's many-sided altack on the fluorine problem at the plant. Scientific measurements are made by agricultural experts of the rate of growih, plant metabolism, crop yield and quality. The farm is also used as a testing ground for U. S. Steel coal chemical byproducts by-products marketed for farm use. Except for small leaf markings on several sensitive trees, results of this research indicate that former fluoride emissions from Geneva did not affect plant llf or crops grown In Utah County. |
