CRAGS AND PEAKS ARE VISITED Page Two It did not take much history or psychology to kindle in those upper Freshmen a desire for adventure and romance (?) Nor did it take many doses ot economics to have that spirit burst outright. And, as the story goes, they, one evening, gathered together and betook themselves to the hills. So that the faculty would have p. little leniency the next day they were likewise asked to go and many did went. It was a lively bunch that gathered that eve, altho there was a noticeable shortage of "skirts(?)" But just the same they roamed until they decided to change their "cold cats" into "hot dogs." The limbs did then break and the approach of Dixon set them afire. The genealogy of the different breeds, together with a classification of their various dispositions was then told by Joel, "as it were." They were then baptized by fire to celebrate their joyous visit to the "crags and peaks." - The Freshmen were played to bed by the tune "The Good Old Religion is Good Enough for Me." BEGIN WORK ON ACORN BIGGER . AND BETER . ...... PLANNED BOOK IS "Lou" Roberts, editor of the year book, - the . Acorn, has returned to school and has launched his campaign for a bigger and better souvenir. One of his first steps along this line was the selection of Mel-bourn Douglass as his business manager. " : "Mel's" ; father is a prominent business man and '"Doug." shares equally in an acquaintance with his father's friends which should enable him to put thru the advertising end of the enterprise. Roberts is very desirous of obtaining some good snap shots for his book and will offer a prize for the best set. A definite announcer, ent will appear in the next Issue and all those who have any pic'ures of interest to the students should retain them until this announcement appears. "Lou" is also in the market for a little literary material in the form of jcke j, f.aort stories, catchy poems, etc. Such material addressed to the Acorn and placed in the Herald box, will be properly taken care of. 0. H. S. TO ISSUE BIWEEKLYPAPER TO SUPPLANT MAGAZINE The Ogden high school again fol- iuwt, iiie eAiiuipie yi vveuei Luiicgc. The high school has decided to issue a paper similar to this one. The new "sheet" will be known as tthe Tiger and will be edited by the "Classicum" staff headed by Chess Hess, assisted by Don Gibson as business manager. The "Classicum" will become the year book, as did the Acorn, when the change is made. The Tiger will be financially backed by an allowance from the student body tickets, as well as from the ads. The change came about after an extended discussion, in which members of the faculty supported the innovation. We congratulate the students of the high school upon the introduction of a bi-weekly, as we are confident that it will be a medium through which interest in the activities as well as the school itself might be increased. May the same success, with which the Herald has met, greet the Tiger, is the wish of this staff. STAFF. H. Dale Phillips, '18 Chas. H. Linford, '18 VOL. II. THURSDAY, EDITORIAL STAFF ADDITIONS The editor takes pleasure in announcing that he has secured the Service bureau last year, but resigned manager of the Herald. "Chuck" was elected president of the Public Service bureau las year, but resigned that office to accept the position on this staff. I-Ie was connected with the Acorn staff of last year, acting as assistant business manager, which qualifies him to assist in the editing of this paper. The editor is looking for some good reporter. If you possess ability along this line, make yourself acquainted. With the addition of Mr. Linford, as well as others under consideration, combined with the students' support, ACORN ANNOUNCEMENT Some explanation, no doubt, should be made in regard to last year's "Acorns." Therefore, I desire to explain the reason for their being distributed so late. First of all, the student Dody, not having compulsory student body tickets and having practically no other means or acquiring money last year, could not finance the Acorn as in former years. Consequently there was some uncertainty for a while as to whether or not it would be printed. The work of editing the paper, as a result, was put off until the end of the school season. The Board of Control, however, because of the hard efforts of Andrew Kasius, business manager of the Acorn, did guarantee it would be printed before this time. It took a long while, however, for material to be gathered together before it could be sent to press. In the meantime Mr. Kasius continued soliciting ads for the Souvenir and had enough money guaranteed for its publication before it was even ready to go to press. Last year was the first year the ads paid for the book and when we consider the fact that the Herald run in competition, in a way, to the year book, the publication of the annual speaks exceedingly well for Mr. Kasius. When school dismissed the book was not in final shape, and so Mr. Kasius took charge of editing the rest for which he deserves praise. Then, as luck would have it, the printer could not get his machinery to working good, and the Acorn had to go thru the press three times. By the time it got off corrected, it was to say the least, rather late in the season. Then some of the students had failed to leave their addresses on their registration cards and so failed to get their copy thru the mail. Then some leather cover ones were misplaced and so, as some students have not called, are still in Mr. Kasius' keeping. Please do not kick about it. It cannot now be helped and the business manager has certainly done his work loyally, altho entailing some sacrifice. E. L. W. Pres. Student Body, 1916-17. Editor Business Manager OCT. 18. 1917 NO. 2 the Herald should continue to grow and improve. The success of this paper depends largely upon the students. It is the opinion of the staff that because the Herald is given the students free of charge and without them putting forth any effort toward its success, it tends to lessen the interest that should be manifested in the paper. If the students were compelled to subscribe for the paper they wold take a greater interest in its success. Before any student receives a copy of the next issue, he or she will have to deposit a write-up, joke or catchy saying in the suggestion box. Better get your jokes in early. Be sure your names are on your contribution. SOCIAL ROOM NOW CERTAIN STUDENT BODY FINANCE COMMUTE DECIDES UPON ROOM 12 The first and probably the most important action of the board of control this year was the appointment of a permanent committee which is to have absolute control of all the finances of the student body. The action of this board in regard to the finances of any activity of the student body is to be absolute and final, the board having the official name, "The AVeber Student Body Finance Committee." It is composed of five members, or the president and secretary and treasurer of the student body, the principal and one member of the faculty, elected by the board of control, and one student to be chosen by the other members of the Finance board. Prof. Kasius was chosen as the faculty representative and Ernest Shreeve was chosen from the student body. At its first meeting Pres-Wilkinson suggested that Prof. Kasius act as chairman and the suggestion materialized. The first work of the Finance board was considering the possibility and advisability of equipping some room in a first class manner for socials and other amusements. The need of such a room has been known for years and the board accordingly decided to do its utmost to splendidly equip a good room. Altho, the money it handles is merely the Student Activity fee, every member decided that the necessity called for a sacrifice of other things and accordingly broke all precedents when it set aside two hundred ($200) dollars for putting a first class hard wood floor in Room 12. In so doing- the Finance committee took a big step. It was Impossible for them to set aside any more. But the other expenses are minor and should easily be taken care of. Prof. Pardoe is going to try and get a Victrola. Let the classes get busy and guarantee to furnish at least the rest. As soon as they do the hard wood floor will be installed and they can use the room at their convenience for class parties, etc. Remember, the quicker they guarantee the rest, the quicker they can have amusement there.
