Show FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 2012 THE SIGNPOST Basketball continued from page 6 Notations continued from page 6 go to the arena for the semifinal against Portland State University. The first thing we all realized once we got to Dahlberg Arena was that the Internet connection there was horrible. Well, I think that was actually the second thing I learned. The first thing was that, according to our guide at the arena, nothing in Montana gets built without a casino. So if you're into gambling, Montana is an option. When we got to the media room in the arena, Roy Burton of The Standard-Examiner greeted me with calls of "Hey, Hot Sauce, we saw your video on YouTube." For the rest of the trip, Burton alternated between calling me Hot Sauce and Wilbur. As anyone who watched the game against PSU knows, it was nervewracking. WSU trailed for much of the game, and it wasn't clear who would win till the final 30 seconds. The Wildcats were able to come out on top. Following the game, we stuck around at the arena for the second semifinal game. Much of the time was spent writing and editing, but I was able to catch a bit of the University of MontanaEastern Washington University game. My favorite thing from that game was listening to UM's student section and its weird chants. Fol- WEBER STATE UNIVERS1117 lowing an EWU traveling call, they chanted, "You walked! You took too many steps!" I thought this might be a pattern and hoped I'd get to hear them chant other basic and self-explanatory things about basketball. Sadly, I didn't get to hear a "You missed it! It didn't go in the hoop" chant. But I did hear UM's fans choose an odd thing to taunt an EWU player about. In the second half, a player from the Eagles got to the foul line. This player was wearing a Tshirt under his jersey, as many college players do. For some reason, UM's student section tauntingly chanted "T-shirt, T-shirt" to him while he attempted his foul shots. The Grizzlies went on to win (possibly thanks to the fans with their odd chants) and set up the final most fans hoped for. After the other semifinal was over, we headed back to the hotel in preparation for the following night's championship showdown between WSU and UM. The highlight of Wednesday was breakfast. We ate at a little place called Paul's Pancake Parlor, where I had the best omelette I've ever had. As for Wednesday night, well, I don't want to talk about that. 13 first-half points and four assists. The Grizzlies came out strong in the second half and quickly tied the game at 36. On UM's next possession, it took the lead. WSU answered back and, with 15:35 left to play, had a 43-42 lead. Four minutes later, the Grizzlies had retaken the lead and were up 50-43. As UM built its lead, WSU continually chose to shoot from deep instead of attempting to drive inside. The Wildcats were able to cut the Grizzly lead to six with 6:23 left in the game. Despite the comeback, UM still held an eight-point lead with less than five minutes to go. A minute later, it was 72-56. UM overwhelmed WSU in the second half, outscoring the 'Cats 54-30 on its way to an 85-66 win. Lillard, who was named to the all-tournament team, turned in the strongest performance for WSU, flirting with a triple-double. He finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. For the Grizzlies, Ward and Cherry led the way with 23 points. UM Head Coach Wayne Tinkle said one of the big factors in the game was how the Grizzlies played as a team. "The reason we're in this position," Tinkle said, "is because we're a team." UM will now head to the NCAA tournament, while the Wildcats will likely end up in the NIT tournament. Baseball spO His tournament By Nick Thurgood correspondent I The Signpost Weber State University's club baseball team fought hard in Mesquite, Nev., last weekend. The team split its games, winning two and dropping two against Boise State University, the University of Oregon, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming. WSU lost to UW 12-8 and beat BSU 0-2 on the first day of the tournament. WSU then beat UVU 16-1 and lost to UO 2-3 the second day. Mike Kilts pitched for the Wildcats in the game against BSU and had a total of 11 strikeouts. The team had nine different players record hits against UVU. The team only committed two errors in the entire fourgame series. Scooter Cisneros, copresident, coach and captain of the team, said he felt really good despite dropping the two games in Mesquite. "We played really good baseball," Cisneros said. "We played great in the games we won, and we were only within one run in the two games we lost. We simply beat ourselves in those two by making foolish errors that could've been avoided. We will be sure to finish strong and not beat ourselves again." The Wildcats will play the College of Western Idaho next in a three-game series beginning on March 17 in Meridian, Idaho. Cisneros said he believes the team will only get better throughout the year and ultimately make the playoffs. "We're practicing hard," Cisneros said. "Things are clicking, and we're excited to go up into Idaho. We hope to gain a lot of momentum that will eventually take us deep into the postseason." Co-president, captain and coach Chris Abbott said he agrees with Cisneros that the freshmen have stepped up, and the team has made a lot of improvements this season. "Five of our 14 players are freshmen who are playing incredible," Abbott said. "We have a lot of confidence this year, and we all believe that we'll make the playoffs this year for sure." The baseball team practices five days a week, alternating from morning to night. Cisneros said it is making it tough to beat. "Defense and pitching are our strengths this year," Cisneros said. "When we are on our game and playing good defense with wellplaced pitches, we're incredibly tough to beat." Cisneros said that it gets tough every once in a while with all his different responsibilities. "It's a lot of work, and I definitely have to plan my days accordingly so I can get it all done," Cisneros said. "I have to be calm on the field and make appropriate calls between innings. Sometimes I have to make pitching changes while playing first base." WSU's baseball team will start its conference games in April. The first home game will be held at Lindquist Field in Ogden on Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. The team said it wants to encourage people to come out and support. "Please look for flyers to be posted around campus with game times as well," Cisneros said. "Come out for a good time and support your Wildcat baseball team." Teams are entered into the playoffs by their conference records. Regional playoffs will be held in La Grande, Ore., in May, followed by the World Series, which will be held in Georgia. The Wildcats will look to make their second appearance in the World Series in three years. well." Moore said that Karlsen said motivating words before the match. "She said, 'Chickens don't win, they get eaten.' I liked that quote and feel like, if we play like that, we could win," Moore said. Karlsen won her first single win of the season that day with SU. "I personally played amazing," Karlsen said. "If I continue that way, I could win the majority of the matches left." WSU fell to 0-12 on the season with the loss, while SU moved to .500 on the year at 8-8. "SU fought hard for the win and showed themselves that they are a tough team, for sure," Moore said. The Wildcats will again look to get into the win column on Sunday when they host the University of Northern Colorado in a Big Sky match at 9 a.m. "I am proud of my team," Moore said. "I think we have a lot of potential to do some damage in the Big Sky." Comment on this story at wsusignpost.corn. Tanner had to go three sets to get her point, downing Katrina Schwab 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. "I dislike that we lost, and the fact we do not start as quickly as we need to in doubles. I think doubles is going to be the key to us winning the rest of our matches," Moore said. "If we get this perfected, then we will see different results.
