Show Poor turn-out haunts WSU intramural tennis By Jared Page Signpost sports editor Only seven athletes made their way to the John Edman tennis courts Saturday to participate in the Intramural Tennis Tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to consist of three divisions: men's, women's and co-rec, in both singles and doubles. Only the men's singles division was played because of the poor turnout."We never have any idea how many people will turn up," said Lesa Moore, Intramural coordinator. "In basketball we had 480 people show up, and we advertised the same. You just never know." Moore said that she did not expect a great turnout, but that she thought the numbers would be higher than seven. "We usually get anywhere from 12-15," she said. "Twenty is the most we have ever had in tennis." Yoshiatsu Terasaki finished at the top of the seven participants, followed by Christian Nilson, second and Brian Sadler, third. Terasaki was awarded a T-shirt for winning the tournament. WSU Intramurals will team up with the Ogden Surgical Society to host the Medicinal 5K Run today in Wildcat Stadium. Registration begins at 4 p.m. and the race will start at 5:30 p.m. Moore said she expects a strong turnout if the weather cooperates. "If it rains, we will lose a lot of people," she said. "If the weather is nice, we could have 150-200 people there." Awards will be given for the best times for each age category, and the $10 entry fee includes a T-shirt. The run is being held to promote "Wellness Week." Saturday, Intramurals will host the 6th Annual Triathlon, beginning at 8 a.m. in the Swenson Gym Pool. The registration deadline is Thursday at 7 p.m. Entry forms are available in the HPEC Issue Room or Intramural office, Track From page 10 usual combination of events, but I feel that we will do well," Johns tun said. The men's team will send four defending champions to the conference meet, including Joe Kelsey, Pokey Eckf ord, Bruce Stevens and Billy Schuffenhaur. All four athletes are expected to repeat as conference champions in their events with the exception of Eckford, who has been focusing on football. Putting football aside, men's coach Chick Hislop said that he still expects Eckford to do well in the long jump. "Pokey has a great chance at winning his event. He is a good athlete," Hislop said. The men's team is favored to win five to seven events at the Big Sky meet and will go into the meet almost injury-free. "Every one of our players are healthy, with the exception of Billy (Schuffenhaur), who is still nursing a bad elbow. That will affect his throwing the javelin," Hislop said. Room 21.
