In a fit of raging jealousy over a woman, he murders his best friend. Overcome with remorse and guilt, DeNiro decides to become a Jesuit priest and dedicate his life to Christ. The Church hierarchy debates the questionable virtue of a reformed murderer as a priest and they find that sending DeNiro into the wild outreaches of the jungled frontiers where the death of priests at the hands of the heathen savages is not common and is quiet. DeNiro accepts the mission from his superiors and sets off on an arduous trek through the unforgiving jungle to get to his mission. He arrives at the mission under the directorship of fellow priest Jeremy Irons. Irons and DeNiro become intimately involved in the lives of the native inhabitants of the region. The Indians embrace Christianity very reluctantly and are cautiously, suspicious of their White God. But, big politics bring their world crashing down as Spain and Portugal sign a boundary relocation agreement that would force the priests to close their mission. The Church hierarchy refuses to accept the Indians as equal citizens because of their savage history and therefore turn down Irons and DeNiro's attempt to reconsider their position on the Indians. After this defeat. Irons and DeNiro refuse to abandon their mission and return to share the consequences along with the people of the mission who refuse to voluntarily leave their land. Irons and DeNiro decide separately how to face the approaching end of their little world in the jungle. Both DeNiros' and Irons' performances were wrought with passion, dedication andheart-wrenching contemplation and introspection. Ennio Morricone's score is both haunting and seductive and provides an ideal aural parallel to the action on the screen. 'CRADLE' DeMornay's character.
