Show Wednesday, January 29, 1992 The Signpost 11 'Hand That Rocks The Cradle' jostles viewers - By JENNIFER IRWIN Staff writer of The Signpost A demented woman on a mission of revenge seduces a family to become hers, children, husband, house and all. "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" is a psychological thriller about a woman (Rebecca DeMor-nay) who loses her husband to suicide, becomes financially ruined, then suffers a miscarriage. The story unfolds when pregnant Claire Bartle (Annabella Sci-orra) visits her new gynecologist who makes sexual advances toward her. She publicly accuses him of sexual molestation which leads him to commit suicide. His widow, played by DeMor-nay, is so overwrought with grief, she loses her baby in a miscarriage. While recovering in the hospital, she discovers the reason for her husband's demise and sets out to destroy the Bartle family. Ott Planetarium located on the second floor of the Lind Lecture Hall. Before "Dawn," there will be another show, "The Winter Sky," detailing the stars, constellations and planets visible in the winter sky. And at 8:30 p.m. there will a : heavenly observation session, aided by telescopes, to take a look at these celestial happenings, Tickets for one show are $1.50 general admission and 75 cents for students; tickets for : both "Dawn" and ''Winter Sky" are $2 general admission and : $1 for students. The observation session is free. She systematically sets out to destroy Claire and assume her position in the family by playing upon Qaire's deepest anxieties. The battle-ground becomes a nursery, hollowed ground to females. "The maternal bond is so strong that it's one of the hottest buttons you can push," says Amanda Silver, the film's screenwriter.This psycho-thriller, directed by Curtis Hanson, leaves you on the edge of your seat. Very similar to "Fatal Attraction," the movie stems from jealousy and pain. It offers a look into the mind of a woman who is so desperate for revenge that she'll stop at nothing to get what she wants. Hanson and Silver exploit the nanny's powerful position in the household with bewildering effect. The casting was excellent and each character added to the suspense.
