Campbell to Shine with Suns Morgan Cloward Sports Editor Last weeks NBA draft came with a few surprises. For'starters, the Utah Jazz landed the catch of the year by drafting Louisiana's Carl Malone. I am sure that Frank Layden and company are still pleased as punch. But Weber State's Shawn Campbell had a surprise of another sort. It seems that Shawn had been told that he would be drafted higher than the fifth round. According to Shawn's father, Bill Campbell, "Shawn was a little disappointed that he didn't go higher in the draft. But, he's real excited to be with the Phoenix Suns." To resurrect an old phrase, Shawn has his work cut out for him. While we breeze about our student business, Shawn is working hard at making the team. Shawn's father stresses the point that Shawn needs to gain around 15 lbs to compete in the NBA. This may take time, but he is currently on an 8,000 calorie diet. So while we enjoy our fun in the sun with school work and the summer job, let's not forget that the former center for Weber is trying his best to rise and shine with the Phoenix Suns. mevj Hot Spot luf I n L : ' I "?J. y uuieji niitj s jeans Spring Jacket Sale reg. $28.95 Now Only S20.00 We carry woman's apparel in sizes and styles kuu. Next week the USFL playoffs begin which will be carried by ABC. Perhaps this will spark a little interest, but I have a strong feeling that things will be the same. It's sad to say but the USFL which shined with promise three years ago has reached its lowest point ever. Just about everyone liked the idea of spring football but unfortunatedly for the USFL this interest was only temporary. Today the league faces poor ratings, empty stadiums, and many weak teams. It seems tha the only team ABC is interested in is the New Jersey Generals. Of course New Jersey has within its ranks Doug Flutie and Herschel Walker, but they alone cannot bear the burden of television ratings. The USFL feels that a move to a fall schedule this season, or the next will help. But I have another strong feeling that a league with mediocre players, unorganized squads and poor attendance hasn't a chance competing with the NFL. In a battle for sellout stadiums and a large television following, the NFL will win. Sure the USFL has flashy uniforms. I especially like the helmets of the L.A. Express. They're really neat. But seriously, what sort of competition can a flashy uniform be to the NFL? Who can top Joe Montana's Pepsi commercial or Tom Landry's American Express episode? What I would like to see happen is a USFL move to a fall schedule. Then, after the dust settles from the their downfall, (I give them one season before destruction), the Steve Youngs and Herschel Walkers of the USFL can brush themselves off and hop on over to the NFL. After all, I think Steve Young would look great in a Dallas Cowboy uniform.
