Show March 31, 1972 visscher named top b.s.a.c. coach By Randy Hollls Another fine Weber State College basketball season was capped last weekend when Gene Visscher, head coach for the Wildcats, was named "Basketball Coach of the Year" for the Big Sky Conference. Coach Visscher, in his first year as head coach after three years as an assistant to Phil Johnson, guided the Wildcats to an overall 18-11 record; and Weber State took the Big Sky crown with a 10-4 slate. Included in that 18-11 won-loss mark were the Wildcats' stunning win over the University of Hawaii in the opening of the NCAA West playoffs, as well as a respectable losing effort against UCLA in the Far-West Regionals. As expected, UCLA went on to capture their sixth straight NCAA basketball championship. Visscher, a graduate of WSC, was All-Conference center in both 1965 and 1966. The "Coach of the Year" selection is made by a vote of the athletic directors of the eight member schools of the Big Sky Conference, which includes Weber State, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Boise State, Northern Arizona, and Gonzaga University. kisses sack axers Northern Arizona University may have to literally kiss a potentially fine baseball season goodbye this year. Norm Johansen, Athletic Director at NAU, reports that eight members of the Lumberjack baseball team, as well as three members of the school track squad, have been struck down and are out of action with mononucleosis, the "kissing disease." This highly contagious disease is often referred to by the latter term because the art or practice of kissing is one of the easiest ways of catching the illness or passing it on. Thus far, no further reports concerning any possible wild parties or abnormal dating habits of those NAU athletes afflicted with the ailment has been issued. Coach Mac Madsen's team has achieved depth in six poisitions and has gained national recognition after a fine fall campaign. In fall competition the Wildcats finished second in Logan's Beehive Tournament and also were second in the Patio Springs event in Eden, Utah. The most important finish by the 'Cats, as far as national recognition is concerned, was in the Tucker Invitational Tournament at Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Wildcats stormed to a seventh place finish out of 22 teams in one of the country's most competitive tournaments. John Abendroth, a sophomore from San Francisco, California, has established himself as the 'Cats number one man on a team which lost two starters from the fall squad. Abendroth finished second in the Patio Springs Collegiate and further established his standing with a twelfth place finish out of 140 in the Tucker Invitational. At his present pace Abendroth could develop into Weber's first legitimate golf All-American candidate. Junior Ron Litzenberger should also be a plus to the Wildcat team. He was runner-up in last year's Big Sky Tournament and recently captured fourth place in the Bloomington Hills Tournament in St. George. 1971 conference medalist and two-time winner of WSC's most valuable player award, Brad Massingill will return for his third spring season. The experienced junior will further strenghten Weber's team. Weber has won the Big Sky Conference title the past two years and with it have established themselves as the fourth ranking golf team within NCAA District Seven. The Wildcats trail Brigham Young, Arizona State and New Mexico. This places the 'cats in a position for a possible bid to the NCAA Championships in June. Weber coach Mac Madsen feels a finish in the top ten at the Far Western Collegiate Tournament, to be held March 28-30, will be necessary to capture the NCAA bid. The Wildcats were the first Big Sky Conference team to ever receive a bid to the tournament. r I 1 Z1 Powder Mountain The Word's Out Skiing IS Defter of powder mountain Don't Forget your I.D.
