Show Friday, January 21, 1972 Top SGGflGoraals Doom Dn UA cage racs by Jeff The game was more like a rerun of "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight," but Brigham Young broke a tight first half open in the second half on the shooting of guard Bernie Fryer and then held on to win despite a tenacious full court press by the "Foster Kids" of Utah. The contest was simply a matchup of ability (Cougars) against hustle (Redskins). Ability won 67-61. Utah had more field goals but the lid was locked when they stepped up to the charity stripe as only 5 for 16 flipped the net for the losers. BYU is now the only team with a clean record in WAC play. The Pumas are 11-2 overall. The Wildcats of Arizona have the experts tied in knots. Going into WAC play, they had compiled a grand total of one win. Now after four encounters they have three tallies in the win column. They knocked off Colorado State and Wyoming last weekend in Tucson. Wyoming and C-State wish they had never gone to sun country as both were blanked by the two Arizona schools. Arizona State mashed Colorado State 99-71 in what was supposed to have been a close contest. In the television game New Mexico held UTEP to only 44 points through 40 minutes of play with a sticky defense and drubbed the Miners 68-44. Top Intersectionals Western Athletic Conference play is limited to one league game this weekend. Colorado State crosses the border to the t f . 1 J ! I ' ; ''-if s 'A r-i Kunz north and should send the Wyoming Cowpokes even deeper in the cellar of the standings with a seven-point win. A couple of interesting inter-sectional games loom this week which should be of local interest. Stanford comes to Salt Lake to face the Utes Saturday. The last , time the Indians played at the Special Events Center was in the inaugural game of the Center. Utah came out on top, but Stanford got a "Homer" job from the refs. Stanford played tough Southern Cal to a two-point decision a week ago. Let's give it to Utah in a tight three pointer because of the Utes home court. Fourteenth ranked BYU will be a prohibitive favorite over Utah State even though all five of the Aggie starters average in double figures. (Don't make bets on this game!) The remainder of the WAC schedule is listed below with my predictions underlined. THE WINNERS (Victors Underlined) Last Night Utah at Utah State Saturday Utah State at BYU C-State at Wyoming Northern Arizona at Arizona Arizona State at San Diego State New Mexico at St Louis New Mexico State at UETP Stanford at Utah Season Accuracy: 11-3 or 78.5 percent. i V SIGNPOST 17SC hosffs Slii encett Today, SaJ Wildcat skiers will host the annual Weber State Invitational Ski Meet this Friday and Saturday at Snow Basin. Stanley Marshall, president of Florida State University after an official forfeited a game to Hawaii when banished coach Hugh Durham refused to leave the gym: "The players were a little lax about things, as sometimes happens, didn't get off to a strong start and Hugh thought they needed a little bit of prodding to raise their level of excitement and motivation. So, as American basketball coaches are known to do, he sought a confrontation with the official. -Press Maravich, LSU coach after being thrown out of his first basketball game against Texas A&M. "They (the officials) are so damned inconsistent. The way they officiate in the Southwest Conference, I feel sorry for the 10 Discount with Student ID Free pick-up & delivery or free parking ( ' 1 f 1 I ' ;i v WILLIE WISE Page 1 1 said it or fhaJ right? Jeff Kunz teams and I feel sorry for the fans." -Bob Smith, the official who thumbed Maravich: "He is a fine coach. He's got a fine record. But he asked for it and when he did I gave it to him. I think the three guys on the LSU radio broadcast team started the whole thing. They were calling us homers and lots of other names. I think it got over to Mr. Maravich and he was a victim of circumstance." -Gus Ganakas, Michigan State coach, after being called for a technical foul by the same Bob Smith. "All I said was 'Bob you and I could rebound if we could push." He said 'Don't call me by my first name' and gave me a technical." ORGANIZATIONS: Print Invitations, News Letters, Programs!!
