Coach Motta Says 'Loss Piles Pressures' by Roger Petersen Signpost Sports Editor Since the stunning loss to Idaho University, coach Dick Motto feels a great amount of pressure piled onto his young Cats. - However, says Motta, "this will give the boys a real chance to show their stuff. If they win the crown they will deserve it." There was a feeling that the -winning streak had created undue pressure on the team. Concerning this Motta says. " Our goal wasn't to perpetuate the winning streak but to win the converence championship, so pressure because of the broken streak is non-existent." Weber State with a 3 win 2 loss record is still in 2 place following Gonzaga's loss to the ISU over the weekend. Leading the pack is Montana State with 5 wins and 1 loss. However, Coach Motta feels that the Bobcats are not in a very favorable posi f,en On Sale Now SPORT SHOP tion because they must now win four straight on the road. Idaho, Gonzaga, Idaho State and Weber make a tough schedule for any team to face on the road. Motta also says, "the main thing to remember is that we're not out of this race yet and with hustle and continued support from local fans and students we'll do it." ; Those who felt the worst about Saturday's loss are the team members. It was probably the most stunning loss since coach Motta 1 has been with Weber State. Reasons for the loss were plain to players and spectators alike. The Cats hit 28 out of 80 field goal attempts and shot 50 from the foul stripe. Idaho University played a good game and credit is due to the players and the coaching staff for a great victory. 1 165 Patterson Ave. Phone 399-3373 OGDEN, UTAH Reg- J xlkm: Uandals Shaffer Winning Sfreok ; Cafs Invade Bengals Tommorrow The Weber State Wildcats extended their' gymnasium record to 46 straight wins Friday night with an 81-78 victory over Gonzaga University only to have the bubble burst Saturday night. Win Streak Ends Weber State's 46 game winning streak ended last Saturday night when the University of Idaho upset the Wildcats 68-67 in a Big Sky Conference battle. The Vandals used a slow down, deliberate style offense throughout the game to contain the fast breaking Weber five. Weber took an early lead, but were overtaken midway through the first half and trailed throughout the game. Monte VreNon came off the bench half way through the second half and sparked the Weber comeback. He stole the ball three times and either passed off to teammates or scored on early layups to bring the Wildcats within two points. Weber could never tie the score although they had several chances, but either lost the ball or missed foulshots. The Wildcats had a one and one situation for most of the second half but could not connect on the first foul try to take advantage of the gift shots. It was the first loss on the home court in over three years. The last time was in 1963 when Southern Colorado State College turned the trick. The damage did more than hurt the Wildcats egos as it may have cost them the Big Sky title. They are now 3-2 in conference play. Montana State leads the league with a 5-1 record but must play the remainder of their games on the road. Weber plays Idaho State tomorrow night, Montana and Montana State the next weekend and then travels north to play Gonzaga and Idaho to finish the season March 3 and 4. The Tigers have also beaten the University of Idaho, who dumped Weber State in a tight contest in Ogden last Saturday. Also on Seattle's home court, ISU defeated the Chieftains 78-76 for a big season win. The Bengal's are fast and exciting floor performers. -. Ron Boone, 6'2" guard, is the leading showman with his 23.1 points per game average. Ron is a current all American candidate. Ed Wilson and Charlie Parks transfers from San Francisco City College, give Idaho State power on the boards. Parks commonly nets points per game while Wilson is averaging 12 points per game. This trio of hot shots are the major reason behind the fall of so many giants at the hands of the Bengals. Idaho State is the only conference team undefeated on their home floor, and re main very much in the thick of the conference race. Behind Coach Motta's push the Cats should be up for this one. Earlier in the season Weber dropped the Tigers 99-84 in Ogden. Nolan Archibald retained his scoring lead with his fine performance against Gonzaga. Nolan has a 319 season points with a 15.9 points per game average. Greg Harrop is close behind with 15.6 points per game. Harrop has now jointed the select group of Jerru Trice and Jim Lyon, the only Wildcats to score more than 1000 points during their careers.
