When one is too large to sit on Santa's knee, Christmas is over! The old-fashoned Christmas has retired and a commercialized one has taken its place. Years ago Christmas meant real joy and happiness, giving little surprise gifts to one's friends as token of thanks, rarely expecting anything in return. The cost was low, but the spirit was high. Contrast this with today's high cost and often low spirit. The idea prevails "I must give an expensive gift because I'm receiving one." Persons feel this way because society has become set in this pattern. The giving of high cost presents makes Christmas a dreaded day. And when Christmas is "over" one will see only trouble, heartbreak and debts. One will see retailers display gifts before Thanksgiving trying to get people in the spending state of mind. Merchants realizing the exchange of gifts is a long and established custom of Yuletide expression take advantage of this festive time of year. It appears a commercial Yuletide has moved in to stay. It pays not to grow too big! Each Credit Hour Costs About $7.00 Each credit hour at Weber college costs approximately $6.95 according to the latest account by the treasurer's office. The state of Utah pays about 65 per cent of this amount for resident non-veteran students. Nonresident students pay $6.95 and any veteran student has the full $6.95 deducted from his $500 annual allowance. This sum for veterans is the result of a contract between the state board of education and the veterans administration. It may seem to resident vets that this charge is more than is proper since many of them pay state taxes, and that as a result there may not be sufficient funds to provide the supplies and equipment necessary. What happens if this allowance is exceeded? This seldom happens since the treasurer's office keeps close account of these expenditures and retards spending so that the allowance wont be exceeded. In some instances where this has happened the college has paid the bill. At the present time it has been necessary in some of the night vocational school classes to divert funds from non-vocational classes to provide adequate supplies in order that Weber's high standards are maintained. He's The Big Cheese By Jim Bonner Chauncey is still hollering "foul" on the selection of Robin Hood. He was chosen by the president of Sigma to represent Sigma and claims that somebody did not count the votes he stuffed in the box picking him as the big cheese. He may demand a recount and give notice to Jacobs as of now, that "crooked politics beat him out," and that he is out to gain the crown that is rightfully his. I wandered into the C. I. the afternoon the SIGNPOST was out, sat down at the counter and then cringed in terror as I listened to a certain lady behind the counter. She was describing with ferocious movements of her hands what would be the fate of one James R. Bonner should she encounter the Weber Forum To the Editor: Working freshman; certainly we veterans gripe, just the same as you do and did in your letter. The only difference is, we bought that right to do it. Bought that right not only for ourselves but for you too, Junior. If these, veterans who you are griping about, together with a lot of others who did not come back, hadn't accomplished this job "well done" you would not have the privilege of writing your nasty little blurbs. In fact you wouldn't even be going to college. You would be saying "yes sir" to one of Schicklegruber's (or Hirohito's) ober officers. You would be doing exactly what they told you to do, pretending you liked it or else Buchenwald. For your information, lad, the big brass decided who saw combat service, not the individual. My advice to you is to button your lip or grow up mentally. A veteran, B. Shields. This diversion is necessary in small classes which haven't sufficient attendance to pay their own way. These small classes are comprised mainly of veteran students, and they are actually receiving more than $6.95 per credit hour. Yet it is they who complain most. In any event vets, understand that the cost is determined by the actual expenditures of Weber college as shown by the records of the previous quarter, and is agreed to by the V. A. which is their official representative. If there be animosities or gripes they should be directed towards the veterans administration or the state board of education or simply towards the rising cost of living. Be fair and neither form nor express opinions until the facts have been personally investigated. Seems she was slightly perturbed over the knock I gave the C. I. about slow service. Coward that I am. I did not speak up and tell her that the subject of her conversation was also in her audience but instead I and ten others patiently and expectantly waited for her to finish so we could order. After thirty minutes of this I was forced to attend a class without my coffee and thus I missed the conclusion of the disastrous results that await me should she find out what I look like. I hear there is a nice cozy little room on the top floor of the gym building that would be just the thing for a smoking lounge. It would make a nice men's lounge even if smoking will not be allowed.Last week Bill Shields bought a chance on the raffle of a 1950 Ford. Yesterday in his accounting class Bill was suddenly called from his class to answer the phone. He rushed to the registrar's office, picked up the receiver and was notified that unless he paid his light bill, they were going to shut his light off. President Grateful For Gift of Flag Through its president Dr. Henry Aldous Dixon, Weber College expressed deep apprciation today for a United States flag donated this institution by Mrs. W. O. Pell, of 321 Twentieth Street in Ogden. The colors were presented to Mrs. Pell following military rites for Major Flyod J. Pell, her son, at West Point Military Academy. Killed at Darwin. Australia, on Feb. 19, 1942, Major Pell was among the first World War II casualties from this nation. He was buried at the military institution . Graduated from West Point in 1937, the military leader was one time a Weber College student and football star and it is his mother's wish that the flag honoring her son in death be kept here for future use. "I am certain he would not have wanted it stored in a box and put way to deteriorate," she said- Speaking on behalf of the college, President Dixon said the symbol of American dignity and freedom will be used in accordance with the wishes of Mrs. Pell "in the institution where Fred was and is so highly esteemed." Major Pell was an officer in the U. S. Air Forces.
