Show Page 4 THE SIGNPOST Ckatlie HctM By TED COLLINS I was sitting in geology yesterday pondering whether or not a frosh's brain would fossilize, when this masterpiece walked in. (All rights reserved.) Owed To Athletes Football players are noble souls, Masses of brawn and muscle. Mental weight lies in their pate; On their shoulders rests a bustle. They battle flesh and squash the sod All this for the Alma Mater. The reason for this vim and fight Is awards they receive much later Plenty later. Basketball players are also tops Among men of skill and physique. Their ability on the basket court They've shown to be most unique. Track men and tennis players also rate, They receive their awards too iate. In other words, dear reader nothing has been done about the award system yet. Tennis Weber's unslung heroes, the tennis players are getting into shape -- speaking of shapes don't you think Collins has lost. With an appropriation of about one hundred and fifty dollars the whole team has a total of 6 balls and hopes of 1 trip, unless Davis takes that alone. There are no regular practices; the boys come as they please. In spite of the fact that no one seems to care whether we have a team or not the boys still fight on. Since Ketchie had a weed rammed down his throat while playing, he has given up smoking (on the court). Clayton is looking for a racket less strenuous than tennis. He says there's a great opportunity lo meet rich girls on the tennis court, so he sticks to the game. Jackson Albion Syphers, better known as Sigh, has a wicked serve that's bound to cause worry (physical and mental) to any opposition. Mel Manfull looks promising; he says he isn't imitating the statute of liberty when he serves. He sneaks up on the ball; gives a better effect you know. Vern "Whatta Man" Strom-berg doesn't bother to practice but he's still plenty good; .lust ask him. If the boys overcome the opposition the way they do the inconveniences they suffer, Weber should chalk up numerous tennis victories. The Whip gals or somebody ought to throw a brawl for the track men, tennis players, and golfers ; they certainly deserve more interest than they get. I was going to, but my sweepstake ticket lost. Golf Roy Stephens, Glen Shannon, Jay Walker and Milton Wilcox excelled themselves in the manly art of golf when they defeated Logan high 9 to 6. Roy Stephens was the hero of the day when he defeated his opposition in the play-off by one extra hole, thus giving Weber the lead. Nice going, iellers as Henry Shortfellow once said, "Those who fight without cheers of a crowd, have .iust cause to be more than proud." P. S. Coach Pete Carlston has been sending his men against the University of Utah netters in practice session and expects them to make a good showing against the Jay-see competition in the Brigham Young university meet to be held in Provo, April 28 and April 29. Ray Dubois, destined to go far in Utah tennis, has been regaining his last year's form and appears to have cinched the top singles spot. Captain Franklin Allen is almost assured of one doubles position with the other position probably going to Bob Kclm, a newcomer on the Parson squad. To Meet Wildcats After the B. Y. U. athletic carnival the Parson squad will swing into action against the Weber college netmen. Dubois, who swept through the Weber singles men last year with hardly a loss of a game, looks to go undefeated again this year in the two matches with Weber. Kelm and Allen may be moved to the other singles posts on the ten-man team that meets Weber. Weber Victorious In New Golf Series The Weber college golfers fin;shecl victorious over the Logan high school team Monday at El Monte golf course in the first match of the season. The schools entered in the league are Granite, Logan, and Cyprus high schools, and Weber college. Granite met Cyprus at Cyprus Saturday afternoon. Weber college defeated Logan on Monday at the El Monte golf course. "Even though this new league competition is more or less of an experiment, we like to foster such contests because they extend the scope of the spring sports calendar and give many more students a chance for inter-scholastic competition," Coach Bob Davis of Weber college stated. Members of the Weber college team are: Ray Stevens, Jay Walker, Glen Shannon, Milton Wilcox and Ellsworth Upp. Coaches of the opposing teams will join the contests as sixth-man entrants. Schedule The complete schedule for the new golf league is: Saturday April 15 Granite at Cyprus, Logan at Weber college. April 22 Cyprus at Weber college, Granite at Logan. April 29 Logan at Cyprus, Weber college at Granite. May 6 Cyprus at Granite, Weber college at Logan. May 13 Weber college at Cyprus, Logan at Granite. May 2a Cyprus at Logan, Granite at Ogden. Water Carnival Plans Announced Ferron Losee recently announced that plans for the big soring water carnival on May 19, are nearing completion. It will be held at either Lagoon or Como Springs. Plans to include championship games of softball and water baseball in intramurals are under way. The day's program will feature swimming, roller skating and a mammoth water circus, preceded by a water parade. Tennis Entries for B. Y. U. Meet Undecided As the end of the tennis ladder tournament draws near, the three men to enter the B.Y.U. meet on April 28, and 29 are still unpicked. At present first, second, and third positions are held by Freeman, Stromberg, and Manful, respectively. However, there have been several upsets and it is possible that Ketchie and Clarke, who occupy fourth and fifth positions, may move up into any of the top three places. Coach Davis stated that he will probably enter the number one man in singles and numbers two and three in doubles. Javelin Klevenow, Ayre, W. Lundberg, Idaho. 157 ft. 5 in. Meet Hot Competition Expected at Provo The Wildcat track team has been pointing for its first test against the Jaysee rivals in the Brigham Young university invitational track meet and relay carnival, slated for April 28 and 29 at Provo. This year's meet promises to be the most keenly contested meet in years. All members of the conference will enter with the exception of Carbon college, of Price. Coach Losee will take his entire squad to Provo. Although he has a large squad, Losee will add three more men before journeying to the meet. These three men will be taken from a group of track aspirants who will try out at the Weber county high school track on Friday. The trackmen have been handicapped in the early season by having irregular practices. The Wildcats have to sandwich practices between those held by the Ogden high tracksters on the small Ogden high school track. Losee Optimistic "I think we can come in for points in nearly all events, but we are not sure of a first in any event. The team this year is well-balanced; there are no outstanding men." said Losee. With Cactus Peterson in the 880 yard run, a fast mile relay team, George Stewart in high ;ump, Elden Gardner in the 440, and Alan Christensen in the low hurdles, Losee's optimism is well-founded. The sprints are closed to the Weber runners, and probably to 'he rest of the conference sprinters, with Earl Childears of Mesa still kicking up the cinders. Childears holds the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard low hurdles record for the conference, and from his present display of form he is apt to lower them. Westminister will pin its hopes on Captain Ike Hall. This speed merchant has bettered the old 440 record in practices this year and is expected to take up where he left off with the shot. Last vear he unofficially broke the shotput record. Ricks Strong-Coach Brinley of Snow is drenched with material, but most of it is inexperienced. At Albion State only three veterans are returning, but the school has a sure point-winner in Paul Mc-Cloy, holder of the mile record for the conference. Ricks is a real contender this year. Coach Clyde Parker has a squad that has been displaying great preseason form. This meet should give an idea of the strength of the Jaysee rivals and may give the coaches a peep at the new conference champs.' Weber Men The complete list of Weber track men for the Provo sport's carnival is: Carl Anderson, weights; Louis Bambrough, 440; Alan Christensen, hurdles, sprints; Norman Chatfield, sprints; Byrne Fer-nelius, distance races; Eldon Gardner, broad jump. 440; Floyd Giles, highjump, weights; Don McClanahan, sprints, javelin; Sylvin Godfrey, polevault, hurdles; Ralph Hancock, weights; Eugene Johnson, 440; Maurice Marshall, distance; Norris Nelson, weights; Keith Peterson, 880, weights; Grant Reese, pole-vault; George Stewart, jumps, sprints; Frank Whittemore, sprints: Glen Stamos, distance races. |
