Western State's game will be stimulated by their last year's 9 to 7 victory won in the last two minutes of play. Wildcats begin practice on September 10, with 20 members of the '39 team reporting with Nye. "Deb" has plenty of football experience behind him two years guard on North Junior's champ team, guard on the big four "mythical" champ team, and two years of college ball where he gained conference honors in '38. "Deb" lives in Ogden, is 19, is six feet tall, and 175 pounds of disaster for the opposition. "We intend to win the conference this year," he admitted. "I don't mean that we'll just walk away with it. We'll have plenty of competition enough to make it interesting, at least." When asked about the players prospects, "Deb" said that they had lost four all-conference players. They are: Frank Berglund, tackle; Jack Thomas, center, and Captain Allen Christenson, quarterback and Glen Clark, full back. CORPSE Time was when we were all lather young and innocent and even believed that college was the place you went to as a reward for finishing high school and for four years you spent your time amusing yourself and other people, eating goldfish, and beating on that poor fellow's derby who sat in front of you at football games. In that majestic state of ignorance and bliss, we also believed vacation was the time when students lay in the cool shade, sipping mint julips, and dreaming of the days when we could go back and swallow more goldfish and beat on more derbies. But we have been to college. We came, we . saw, and we changed our minds. Our diet was fortunately limited to Mrs. Tanners tangy salads, which fairly ooze vitamins, and those luscious creamy things we consumed at the soda fountain. Much to our surprise we even managed to study occasionally. But the biggest surprise of all was the crazy things that we found ourselves doing on our vacations. For instance, Tim Dyer took it seriously when we told him to "come clean." He spent a glamorous summer in the Union Pacific laundry. "Deb" Nye, football captain, spent a breath-taking summer working at the City Cemetery, caring for the grass and you know what else. Perry Leavitt, crawl stroke champion, is training on a hot dry construction job. Winslow Gardener is in the dough at the Continental Bakery. Stan Johnson is a pearl diver on the Challenger running from San Francisco to Kansas City, Kansas. Wayne Christensen and A. C. Cook spent the summer teaching the little boys and girls how to do the jelly fish float. The last day that the pool was open before we cleaned it, Coach Swenson let some live trout caper around in the briny deep, so that the boys could chase them. It's marvelous exercise for the fish. There were two trout that just plain didn't want to be caught. When the boys gave up, then "Chris" had to go in to get them. So the three little fishies in a itty bitty pool, etc., etc. Bang! Orton, vice president; Bill Warnick, reporter, and Garrett Walthius, yell leader, are also attempting to find a faculty member who dares to act as adviser. Contemplated activities for the year in addition to parading in their purple sweaters with a wildcat on the sleeve, include assisting freshman registration, custodianship of the Victory bell at all rallies and football and basketball games, and a trip to accompany the football team to Pasadena in November. FAVOR BRIGHT COLORS Bright red and bright green flannel and wool jersey shirts are going to be all the rage at school this year, with the favorite style a copy of that worn by the Canadian Mounties!
