Advices from Miiuila sa.y the American Ameri-can garrison of Uatubiy, island of Saraar, consisting of thirty men be-" be-" longing to the l-'orty-third regiinent, has been attacked by rebels. Twenty of the Americans were killed. The remainder re-mainder were rescued. The Americans fought for two days and then the rebels managed to ignite the roof of the church and it burned away and finally fell upon those inside the edifice. The walls remained intact, however, aud were used as a shelter by the besieged be-sieged Americans for three days longer, ., '.: 1 1,3 ; ,T r, tne enemy wnimiug all sides at once. The Americans continued tiring from the windows aud doors of the church and did good execution among the Filipinos. It is estimated that over 200 of tho latter were killed, many dead bodies having been removed from the scene of the lighting. After five days resistance by the Americans a lieutenant aud eight men arrived from Laoan and engaged the besiegers who thereupon retired. |
