Show CARRIED DUMMY GUNS. Surprising Discovery Made In Capture of Filipinos. New York, Feb. 28. A cablegram from Manila says: A surprising discovery dis-covery was made when the insurgents captured on the skirmish line were brought in. It was found that many of them were armed with dummy rifles, ri-fles, there beiug about three dummies to every Mauser. This bluff made by the du mmies having been discovered, the secret of the apparently excellent equipment of the insurgents has been revealed. It was a source of wonder to General Otis where arms could have come from. Consul-General Wildman has insisted that he has efFectually suppressed the shipping of rifles and ammunition from Hongkong, and confirmatory evidence of this has not been wanting, but in spite of all this armed bodies of insurgents, insur-gents, carrying equipment seemingly of the first-class, have been seen frequently. fre-quently. If the ratio of dummy guns to ef feetive arms found on the captured insurgents in-surgents holds good in the entire insurgent in-surgent army, then the actual fighting strength of the Filipinos does not amount to much, although it must be admitted that they are improving remarkably re-markably in their markmanship. |
