Show We know of no portion of Utah where there is so many song birds as there is in Washington county. From early morning until sunset the cheery songs of mocking birds, canaries, larks and other birds, svhose names sve know not, fills the air with ssveet music. Every effort should be made to preserve our songsters. Although they may do a little harm to fruit. ' still the good they do in clearing off insect- pests more than repays for what little harm they do. We saw a boy kill a canary with a catapult on Thursday, and questioned him as to whether he knew it was wrong to kill such ssveet song birds. The boy replied that he did not know it svas wrong. Parents should instruct their children to distinguish dis-tinguish between song birds and birds which may rightly be regarded as pests. To the latter class belong the English sparrow. They are gradually driving the song birds out of and steps should be taken to exter minute them. The children should be taught to distinguish them and their eggs from other birds and their eggs, and the. destruction of sparrows and their eggs encouraged. We do not advocate the use of the catapult. - too many eyes and windows have been destroyed, by them. |
