Show farmers excursion an enjoyable success A big treat and great success was the farm bureau excursion to hurricane and alon canyon aug 20 27 and 28 everybody who went said they enjoyed it thoroughly and there could be no doubt 0 this to anyone who saw the merry party the number who took part in the excursion waa greater than expected it was anticipated that there would be about from the west part of the county and 76 from the east and it was thought probably this number would be somewhat increased but no one had any idea that the final number reach nearly as was the case there were 53 autos and a number of wagons people registered at the alley way camp in alon canyon and how many tailed to register lg not known there were nine bishops in the representing rockville hurricane leeds bt george east st george west santa clara and veyo and these took an active part in anything and everything that conduced to the pleasure of the people the party started leaving st george at 7 a m most of them leaving later than this the dixie silver band stopped and played a few tunes at each town en route the people showing their appreciation by feeding the band members on watermelons water melons and grapes As the party arrived at hurricane each car was met by a reception committee who located the visitors at the homes where they were to stay while there too much cannot be said in praise of the good people of hurricane tor their generous hospitality and kindly regard tor the welfare of their guests they furnished meals beds etc free of all charge and did their best in every way to make everybody feel at home and they succeeded for to all appearances the home people and their guests were one big family laughing joking and enjoying the glad occasion as only good friends can after dinner at hurricane sports consisting of wrestling foot racing tugo tug o war and a baseball game were held the east side of the county beat the west side in the baseball game the west side winning the tug o war good nature marked these and the other con tests everything being very enjoyable some of the party went to the hot springs the sports were on and others visited the springs in the evening at the close of the baseball game everybody was to partake of the fruit feast the fruit that had been on exhibit was handed out the people eating the luscious watermelons water melons grapes and other fruit great gusto it was indeed a splendid feast and the quality of the fruit was beyond all praise the fruit exhibit was remarkably fine as a whole and exceptional in the size and quality of some varieties apples especially the special exhibits numbered about thirty and were made by individuals no prizes being offered down the center of the ball ran a long bablo loaded with fine elberta peaches cards on top of them bearing the words help yourself the editor did no succeed in obtaining the names of all the exhibitors but some of the best exhibits follow very good pecans and engllish walnuts amos workman grapes of various kinds T M hanton second crop of strawberries and bottled fruit mrs jed campbell splendid peach exhibit harvey hall sweet potatoes nepal workman display of variety of fruits all exceptionally good bishop baduel isom honey in comb and cans harry shamo peanuts N A larson there was sorghum cane 14 feet tall a bunch of very long and heavy alfalfa of the ath crop very fine and dry land corn and grain it was an ex that the people of hurricane may feel proud of and the visitors praised it highly in the evening the dixie silver band gave an open air concert that was greatly enjoyed the band being loudly applauded following the concert dancing indulged in the very fine gymnasium being crowded and all having a delightful time it there Is one thing more than another of which hurricane may feel proud it Is their school building which Is very large constructed of brick and all on the ground floor A splendid gymnasium occupies the central portion at the end of which there Is a very fine stage besides the gymnasium there are eleven fine large well lighted class rooms inside the lobby stands the fountain won by hurricane in the statewide clean town contest in 1915 tor being the cleanest town in the state in its class this fountain was liberally patronized by the visitors after breakfast the next morning a start was made for alon canyon stops were made at la verken rock valle and the band playing several selections at each place watermelons Water melons were brought out by the to which the band members did full justice approaching the route lies partly through a lane shaded on either side and overhead with ll anthus trees which have been kept down so as to form dense and delightful shade this tree bears a resemblance to certain palms and the lane was dubbed palm avenue by some of the party at the end of palm avenue nearest a banner was stretched across the road bearing the word welcome the banner is a very fine piece of work the body of red the word welcome in white and national flags worked in on it on the reverse side the ban ner bore the words come again and needless to say many of the party will do so Sp ringdale lies at the gateway to alon canyon in the midst of scenic splendor the run from there to the wylle way camp is about three miles through scenery that makes one sit up and take notice on arriving at the camp it was found ready for the party mr wylie having made all arrangements for the care of the visitors most of these had brought their own bedding and camp equipment and soon made fires and prepared dinner others took their meals at the wylle way dining room and in the tent houses accommodations being provided by mr wylle tor 63 after dinner sports were indulged in including squaw wrestling and other stunts which produced much merriment some of the visitors made trips up the canyon climbed the hills waded in the river and visited the waterfalls of which there are several in the canyon they all enjoyed themselves as they pleased and were delighted with the cool shady nooks and pure cold water after supper the band gave a concert it was rather doubtful whether they would bo in condition to play after eating BO much watermelon etc but the tact Is they never did play better in a better place nor to a more appreciative audience tho music certainly did sound good in that wonderful place and no one enjoyed it mora than mr wylle who praised the band very highly after the band concert a program was rendered A camp are had been lighted and as its flames shot up it revealed a very pretty scene here among the trees the people gathered the organ furnished by ward for the occasion was placed against ono tree where mrs R U macfarlane took charge of it and played during the singing the band played a couple of selections while the people gathered the first number on the program was high on the mountain tops followed in succession by a talk by bishop morris allson what the farm bureau Is doing for the farmers band selection singing 0 ye mountains high talk how the county regards the farm bureau work b co corn james judd violin and cornet duet by the camp fire prof earl bleak and clare gates mrs bleak at the organ talk what it takes to pull oft a farm bureau stunt county agent J R tippetts vocal dut fred and his sister rhoda charmingly rendered talk what the next excursion will be john H pres of the farm bureau a vote of thanks to mr wylle was proposed by geo brooks jr secy of the farm bureau and heartily responded to mr brooks also gave out a general invitation to the coming fruit festival singing america the star spangled banner placed by the band closed the program the singing was very inspiring nearly everybody joined in the violin and cornet duet was most excellent and pleased the people so much that they insisted on a little more of it the talks were all good bishop allson showed very plainly what a vast benefit the farm burbaw had been to the farmers going into figures to prove how much had been saved to the farmers through it and ended by paying a high tribute to co abt tippets co corn judd said he was glad the county had been be nand the county agent and said it could not do too much to support a move which had proved of so much benefit to the county co abt tippetts said united effort was the great thing in pulling off a farm bureau stunt he appealed to the farmers to make themselves strong by cooperation and a bigger membership in the the farm bureau the other speakers also asked for stronger membership in the bureau fres said the next excursion would be an educational one to one of our neighboring counties to study their methods in dairying hog raising etc etc after the program mr wylle offered the large dining room tor dancing there was not room tor the large crowd to dance at one time so they took turns to enjoy a dance the next day thursday the crowd went up the canyon to view the scenery see lumber brought down 2000 feet on a cable from the top of cable mountain to indulge in sports etc of this the editor saw nothing as be had to leave early that morning to issue the paper that day however a great time was had and enjoyed by everybody there Sp ringdale has the thanks of the farm bureau and all who attended the excursion for furnishing the wood for cooking the organ and the wagons for the trip to the cable in everything for the care and comfort of the visitors most heartily cooperated mr wylle remarked to the editor after the program wednesday night that he never saw a large crowd enjoy themselves so well nor a better behaved crowd this was a big compliment and one certainly deserved for the behavior of the people was all that could be desired may it always be so the return home was made thursday evening some arriving home quite late it was certainly an excursion that bill ba long remembered with pleasure by those participating and it is to be hoped similar excursions will be made every summer the energetic county agent and farm bureau officers are to be thanked for the splendid success |
