Show improvements here noted and salt lake city utah aug 8 1918 editor washington county news st george utah dear sir my daughter katie and I 1 will always retain a vivid remembrance of our eighteen months including two winters residence in picturesque picture que peaceful progressive st george we greatly enjoyed the generally mild weather of the fall winter and spring seasons and our pleasant as with the good people of that beautiful little valley in the rocky mountains that I 1 became somewhat seriously during the latter part of my sojourn there was certainly not due to any unpleasant conditions climatic or otherwise I 1 might have had that disagreeable experience any where else I 1 would like the people of st george to know that I 1 have nothing but the most agreeable feeling in regards to my stay there and it was with extreme regret that I 1 departed we were delighted at the thrift and development evidenced there the splendid academy and library buildings electric light and power plant good water system extension ot concrete grading the streets and a growing movement in the direction of improving homes and surroundings that Is as it should be in such an advantageous location as st george with its semitropical climate where vegetables grains flowers trees and other desirable and beautiful products thrive luxuriantly making it a choice place of residence I 1 believe the statement of a scientific gentleman who resided there several years that there are more days and hours of sunshine in st george than in any town in any other slate I 1 hope that the improvements so well under way will be continued and extended and that many citizens will be added to the present rather limited number to enjoy the salubrious climate and peaceful influences that are characteristics there I 1 testify that the kindness morality and patriotism of the people of st george la not excelled anywhere the healthful climate of dixie Is well known and the numerous inquiries made of us since our return to bait lake city are evidences that there are hundreds of our people some of whom are in a poor condition of health who now spend many months each year in los angeles or other places on the california coast to escape the cold experienced in the northern parts of utah who would prefer to reside in st george during those months they could and housing ac commo lations there to suit them when st george Is provided with some modern apartment houses and a well equipped is established when the public squares are nicely parked corrals removed from the sidewalk lines fences made sightly lawns in front 0 dwellings and there are more houses made attractive and provided with sanitary conveniences your lovely little town will doubtless have numerous visitors tor lengthy periods and many more permanent residents than at present that Is a condition I 1 sin berely hope to see in the not tar dis tant future you mr editor are to be commended tor your unflagging interest in encouraging the substantial growth of st george and the general welfare of its worthy and enterprising citizens a majority of whom are amply able to promote such improvements prove ments as are most desirable with the utmost respect and earnest wishes for the good of all I 1 remain yours very truly D M mcallaster McAll lster |
