another or to judge closely between the greatest and the less great factors in the progress of civilization but if there is a greatest working field or a most important factor then this must surely be science science is the backbone of human progress its achievements have given health t v wealth comfort and safe rafe living to man and have annihilated both apace space and time it is subduing the earth wirth for mans sake and making the world one this is the more fully realized when nhen a consideration of what a few scientific attainments mean to modern life e g steam power steam engines land and sea trafficking icing gas power gasoline engines eng inea dry farming tractors and automobiles electricity telephone telegraph lighting and heating chemical industries as the beet sugar refining metallurgy of iron and steel scientific agriculture sanitation and pure foods medicine and surgery what a nond wonderful erful part of man these achievements are they represent the noblest toil of the greatest spirits of the age god is sure surely good to roan man and the earth is an abode of wonder and loveliness now it is for the pur curpas pas n irtis of cra chaitin itin a deep leap appreciation in the souls of our young men and women and for the purpose al to of opening a field of thought that would perchance give the world another scientist in due time that we have in our institution departments of scientific study the physics department from which these few thoughts come deeply appreciates the opportunity afforded us here to outline our work and equipment the department is in po possession of about 00 worth of arpra ggs which ha la been ruefully rae fully motel to duct all the te ned of a bb school class in physics we have complete apparatus for 16 to 20 students also several pieces of lecture demonstration apparatus president E H snow is the founder of our department and we are happy to make mention of his name he and the school and the physics students will surely keep the department at the front in all that our noble institution stands for just now we have set ourselves to obtain a fine static electric machine and demonstration apparatus for wire wireless lebs telegraphy our fellow students and friends in will ill learn more of this later the object of our physics course ia is as stated to breite a love of nature and to open to the students a thought field a working ground which may prove to be the field in which their talents would serve the horld best A student who goes through school without any science Lo courses uil wilfully fully cheats himself out of a world of thought and activity the philo ideas of such a student are meager and limited to alt a narrow scope of possibilities consider even the greit moral training that must come to a physics and chemistry student who juggles with ith both experiment and mathematical problems to realize the rigorous facts of the conservation of macs ma and of energy of the wonderful principle of work that the sum total of the work received from any machine or other device can only be equal to and never exceed the amount of work put into it science is sometimes thought by the onlooker to be hard and cold fi isted but to him who iho breathes her mighty inspiration she is full of warmth life and glory signed DEPT due to lack of space we vie are unable to publish any class notes if
