Show Bug Killer By "brewing" a combination of tleeping powder and a substance jsed in synthetic perfumes and poison poi-son gas, science has presented the rapidly expanding insecticide industry indus-try with a new "bug killer." Actually, the process is a little nore involved, says the National Ge-)graphic Ge-)graphic society. It consists of con-lensing, con-lensing, in the presence of sulphuric icid, chloral hydrate a powerful sleep inducer and analgesic and rionochlorobenzene an "intermediate" "intermedi-ate" frequently used in the manu-. !acture of dyes, drugs, synthetic per-lumes, per-lumes, and some poison gases. The oowder which results is capable of dealing a deadly blow to insects without harm to humans, as far as las been determined. This white, almost odorless pow-' ler, soluble in both alcohol and kerosene, kero-sene, but not in water, fights under Ihe name of "DDT" (dichlorodiphe-ayl-trichloroethane). It was first pre--pared about 70 years ago in a German Ger-man university, but its value as an insecticide was only recently discovered, dis-covered, i |
