Show Over 500 People Attend Molly Pitcher Program Miss Helen Brooks Honored As Molly Pitcher Day Bond Contest Winner Perhaps nowhere in the United States was the same atmosphere set for the July 24, Molly Pitcher program as that staged in St. George. This program was presented pre-sented on the open-air pavilion and was witnessed by more than 500 people, who came to participate partici-pate in the community sing, and to witness the presentation of Miss Helen Brooks, winner among nine competitors for the honor of the official Molly Pitcher. The program opened with community com-munity singing led by Mrs. Mae A. Pace with Paul Thompson at the piano. Mrs. John J. Phoenix Jr., Bond drive chairman, then made a short report of the success suc-cess of the women's Bond drive for July in St. George and presented pre-sented to Glenn E. Snow, president presi-dent of the Dixie junior college, a Bond in memory of each of the boys who have thus far made the supreme sacrifice, the same to serve eventually as scholarships honoring these men. President Snow accepted the contribution in behalf of the boys and of the college and expressed high hopes for the future of American youth. A girls' chorus sang, "Any Bonds Today", the group including Jeannene Harris, Marie Pickett, Esther Judd, Irma Hafen, Valrea Hafen and Jewel Mitchell. Then came the presentation of Molly Pitcher. Directed by Mrs. L. A. Porter and Mrs. B. G. Milne the eight attendants in the contest, dressed in smart checked gingham pinafores, pina-fores, ushered in the winner, Helen Brooks, who carried a spray of red roses, and was very charming. Pitchers designed by Vivian Covington Cov-ington were used by the eight girls in a clever pianologue-pan-tomime of the Molly Pitcher song, with words and music by Tom Adair and Sgt. Dick Uhl. Besides Miss Brooks the group included Elaine Cannon, LaNorma Seeg-miller, Seeg-miller, Lorna Fordham and Misha Bentley in pink; Betty Jo Morris, Vivian Covington, Betty Foote and Betty Horsley in blue gingham. This was a very clever number. Melba Baker sang the Pledge to the Flag, and Cpl. Roy Williams Wil-liams led in the saulte. Marion Bowler sang, "My Own America", and military medley, and the entire en-tire congregation joined in singing, sing-ing, "The-Spangled Banner", Appreciation was expressed by the large crowd for the excellent program and those in charge thanked all who assisted in making mak-ing the evening a success. |
