Show More Interest Shown In Poppy Contest This Year Than Ever Before Winners of the 1944 Poppy poster contest sponsored in St. George by the American Legion and Auxiliary, Aux-iliary, Lester Keate Post No. 90, were decided by the judges, Mrs. Guy Hafen, Mrs. Ralph J. Lauper and Mrs. Grant Whitehead, from one of the largest collections of posters yet recorded, it is reported. re-ported. There were 54 entries from the Woodward high, 30 from the Elementary, and seven from the senior high department of Dixie junior college. First place in the Elementary group was awarded to Eugene Leany of the fifth grade; second place to Mary Miles; and third place to Dexter bnow, ootn ot the sixth grade. In the Woodward high group, Elaine Short won first place; Beverly Moody, second; and Robert Rob-ert Nelson, third. Margaret Dawn Andrus took first in the senior high group; Deane Syphus, second ; and Shirley Milne, third. Because of failure to comply with some of the regulations, such as the proper placing of the poster on the paper, and the inclusion in-clusion of the words, American Legion or Legion Auxiliary in the wording, some of the very outstanding out-standing posters had to be self-eliminated, self-eliminated, explained the officers, who express hearty appreciation for the fine response given the contest this year. |
