Show St. George Stake Reorganized At I Stake Conference Held Here Last Sun. I Harold S. Snow Replaces W. O. Bentley As President of the Stake Reorganization of the St. George stake was effected during the Sunday afternoon session of the L.D.S. quarterly conference held here last Saturday evening and Sunday. with Apostles Reed Smoot and George F. Richards as official visitors from the General church authorities. Pres. W. O. Bentley and his counselors. Wilford W. McArthur and Orval Hafen. who have served in this capacity for the past nine years, and George E. Miles, who has officiated as stake clerk since 1901, were all released with a vote of appreciation for their services. Pres. Harold S. Snow of the St. George Temple was called to the position of president of the stake with Bp. Vernon Worthen of the St. George west ward and Wm. H. Prince being called to serve as his counselors and Bert Lang-ford Lang-ford as clerk. Saturday evening was devoted to social phases of the conference with the ward and stake relief society women meeting in the south ward chapel from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to honor the recently released stake board members including in-cluding Mrs. Juanita Brooks, Mrs. Zora S. Jarvis, Mrs. Marie Cannon, Can-non, presidency; Mrs. Ella J. Seegmiller. secretary-treasurer; and members Mae M. McAllister and Maud R. Woodard. Singing musical numbers, toasts and luncheon made up an hour's program, pro-gram, each of the six being presented pre-sented with tokens of remembrance. remem-brance. From 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday school officers and teachers enjoyed en-joyed a social in the chapel hall and all other members attended a general social in the recreation hall. Sunday morning sessions for departmental de-partmental work were held in the south ward chapel, the elementary ele-mentary school building and the seminary building at 9 a.m. with the general conference session held in the recreation hall at 10 a.m. More than 1200 people attended this session. Following singing by the choir, Pres. W. O. Bentley made a brief address of welcome, calling on Rulon Orton, Woodrow Dennett, Erwin Foster and Howard Schmutz to report their respective missions t o Czechoslovakia, Germany, England Eng-land and Switzerland. Each of these returning elders gave interesting in-teresting accounts of their missionary mis-sionary labors, of the conditions existing in these parts of Europe and of the many good people among whom they had labored, and each bore testimony of their faith in the restored gospel and of the great work yet to be accomplished. ac-complished. Official Visitors Inspirational talks were made by both official visitors, Apostle Richards talking on missionary work, the word of wisdom, Temple work and the responsibility of youth. Apostle Smoot devoted his remarks to the factors that tend to disrupt home, civic, state, national and international progression, pro-gression, listing several salient facts regarding envy and covetu-ousness, covetu-ousness, and urged all to put these out of their lives and replace re-place them with the virtues of kindness, willing human service and unselfishness. Both left their blessings upon the people of this stake. Special musical numbers included includ-ed a vocal solo, "Dream of Paradise", Para-dise", by Clive Hartman; duet, "Beside the Still Waters" by Mary Lou Wells and Adrene Mc-Arthur, Mc-Arthur, accompanied by Mrs. Nettie Whitehead and "Come O, Thou King of Kings" by the choir. The afternoon session at 2 p.m. had as its main features the stake reorganization as listed, with brief remarks being made by each of the outgoing and the incoming officers, and short sermons by the visiting apostles. President Bentley reviewed the history of St. George stake listing the succession of stake presidents, beginning with John D. T. McAllister, Mc-Allister, who served until 1888; Daniel D. McArthur, 1888 to 1901; awara n. snow, iyut to 1920; Jos. K. Nicholes, 1925 to 1930 and himself with his counselors from 1930 to the present date. He told also of the church building projects pro-jects in the stake during his term of office (I) and mentioned work ahead still to be done, expressing appreciation for the support of his counselors and of the people. W. W. McArthur expressed gratefulness for the opportunities given him for special church services ser-vices during the past 14 years as Bishop and counselor in the stake presidency; for the people who make up the stake and the work they accomplish. Orval Hafen recalled many interesting in-teresting events during the past nine and one-half years while, he has served in this position and expressed appreciation for the confidence shown him in this work and for the development he has received. Following request singing of the missionary, song, "I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go", by the choir, President Snow said he felt humbled with his call but would try to follow the thought expressed ex-pressed in the song and with the support of his associates and the stake members hopes to put over the responsibilities and objectives of this stake to the best of his knowledge and ability. Vernon Worthen said he was surprised to be called to this position but knew from past experience ex-perience he could work with Pres. H. S. Snow with whom he had been associated much of the past 40 years. Wm. H. Prince said this was his first experience of this nature but he is willing to do his best. George E. Miles reviewed his coming into activities of the church and of the joy he had in his varied labors in filling a three year mission, serving 17 years as stake superintendent of Sunday schools and for the past 35 years as stake clerk. Elfonda Swapp of Enterprise, and Howard Schmutz of St. George reported their missionary labors. Miss Swapp served two years in the Central states and Mr. Schmutz in the Swiss mission. mis-sion. ' Bert Langford. newly appointed stake clerk said he desired to serve the Lord and keep his commandments com-mandments and to fulfill all calls made upon him. Roy A. Welker of the Institute In-stitute of religion spoke briefly on the newly organized seminary Sunday schools to serve those coming from other wards to attend at-tend the college, as a part of the regular set up of this department or religious training. Apostle Reed Smoot sermonized on the word "Can't" reading Edgar Ed-gar A. Guests's poem on the subject sub-ject and urged that this word be struck from use whenever anyone was called to perform service for their fellow men and in the work of the Lord, that we may have the joy of living. |
